The best, and most effective, way to lose fat is cardio! If you do 45-60 minutes of it 5-6 a week, you'll burn a large amount of fat. You will also get rid of the fat around your stomach after a good amount of time with cardio and crunches as well.

Diet and exercise... The old fashioned, current, and healthy way is the only way...
Eat healthy and frequently... Eating 6 times a day (every 2-3 hours) increases your metabolism and makes sure your body doesn't go into starvation mode (which happens after 4 hours with no food, and means your body is now storing any excess food as fat and even breaking down muscle to store as fat to avoid starvation)...
Make sure that you eat SMALL healthy meals with smaller healthy snacks in between... A good caloric intake for an adult is between 1200-1800 calories and definately possible especially if you are getting the right amount of fruits and veggies cause they can fill you up and are low in calories... The remember the more natural the food the less calories are in it...
Exercise can be worked into a daily routine to help shed some lbs of body fat... A gym is great and if possible a trainer can be a lifesaver...

ah! you and i are in a similar situation! the most important question you have to answer is: HOW BADLY DO YOU WANNA LOSE THE WEIGHT????
you really have to do cardio exercises: start slow but work to the point wherein you can get into 45 minutes- 1 hour on the treadmill, elliptical cycle , dance class.. do whatever you enjoy so that you can last longer.
and yes, you have to do weights! at least 20 minutes of weight exercises at least 3 x a week. harley pasternak;s book is pretty good. the best is really to go to a gym and ask for help.
last but not the least, you can work out like a fiend but if you do not control your eating portions, not much will happen. avoid food high in sugar, transfat and if you do eat carbs, limit the portions and always eat the wholegrain or wholewheat varieties. steam, broil and grill but do not fry.
pin a photo of yourself when you were relatively slim (after childbirth please)
and do not give up! if you insist on doing the southbeach diet (which claims to make you lose your belly first), make sure to take multivitamins and so not take phase 1 longer than you have to.
how badly do you want this? if you what it badly then you will pay your dues with conviction! vanity knows no pain!!!!

Look into a weight management system that focuses on the Glycemic Index or GI, which is a system that measures the rate at which simple carbohydrates are absorbed into the blood stream after digestion.
The "Glycemic Indes Food Guide" (http://www.marketamerica.com/PULSE99/index.cfm?action=shopping.uoProduct&prodID=6420 ) from the Transitions Lifestyle System gives you a good overview of the Glycemic Index and how you can lose body fat and keep it off more effectively.

I weighed 170 and I'm 5'6'' after my baby was born. And I too, still looked pregnant. Everyone told me to run and eat right, but the best thing I found was an exercise bike. I bought it for $80 and it's well worth it! I would watch TV for 30 minutes to an hour and ride the bike while I watched. I lost weight really fast without having to find someone to watch my baby while I went out to run or go to the gym. It's was a lot easier on my knees and back than it was to run, too! good luck!

Start a low-fat, low-cholesterol diet and do cardio workouts.
Using them in conjunction with each other will give you faster results. Good luck!
P.S. Also avoid as much sugar as you can, and try to eat only whole grains when you eat starches. It will help keep your energy levels from going to extreme highs and lows.
