I'm Greek, living in the Brazil. and I'm trying to improve my Portuguese... These are tips I can give you:
- keep on talking to as many different persons as you can
-don't be shy and make all possible mistakes without shame, after all they should know better and help you, you are a stranger.
-try to watch English/American movies with Portuguese subtitle (that is exactly what I am doing these days...), if you have cable TV with Brazilian programs..
-find a Latino American-born girlfriend or boyfriend (no racial implications just practical) she or he would talk to you in English and help by explaining thing in Spanish ( and you, being a Brazilian should understand Portunhol, eh?)
....
Boa sorte

Practice practice practice. Make friends with some locals and just go do things with them. You'd be surpised how quickly you can learn a language if you immerse yourself into a culture. I worked for a company for about 8 years that had previously been Brazilian owned and operated and many of them were still there as managers and coworkers. I've never had better people to work with!! I'd work with Brazilians again any day! Make friends! You'll find that most Americans are willing to help you learn new skills and help you through the rough spots!

1st three months---collect 250 most commonly-used questions, phrases and statements in your mother tongue and English and write them down in a special note-book that you can carry around. Practice them daily with one or two friends who speak English well. Watch English news on the telly daily. Grab every opportunity to speak at the market, restaurant, shopping malls, etc

Next 3 months---polish up on basic grammar and vocabulary.

By the end of 6mths you should be able to understand and reply simple questions in English. Keep improving and invest in a good dictionary. Best of luck!
