It's not an illness - you're just recreating what you're used to - it's your comfort zone and, it's familiar.

If this 'need' of yours is getting in the way of your interpersonal relationships then I would say you might have a specific mental illness. On the other hand...if this 'need' to struggle is basically your way of keeping your life under control then I would say you're clear of a mental illness.

A person who uses a conscious effort to get attention is a rather sick person. Instead of trying to bring themselves up they play the martyr to their mental problem to the ninth degree. The problem arises as people discern that this person thrives by stewing in their mentally depraved life , and they turn their back on them. A person that plays this role is not fixable.

If you were raised in chaos, then it is your norm, if things go too smoothly, you will create drama because that is what you are used to..
You do not feel that you deserve a good life so you sabotage your self it is like a drug living on the edge.
Eventually you will self destruct
Or turn it around when you become more aware.

you can go to the Doctor i don't know if its a chemical imbalance or simply self-pity ...the failure mentality . subconsciously sabotaging any possible winning outlook is someone who has a pocket full of excuses on having or getting a better life..tucking away any potential of being successful because it would be to painful to have had it all then loose it and/or listen to this have it all & not feeling you deserve it... so consider not indulging in self-affliction & self -pity calling it "my life." its better to have a happy life then a sad one....

It seems like this is the type of individual who when faced with 2 choices and one is easier than the other always must choose the harder one. I think that is a symptom that they are punishing themselves for something.
