7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. 8 He who does not love does not know God, for God is love. 9 In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. 10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 1 John 4:7-11

While I do agree that how you live can be a good witness there are people who live great lives who are not Christian. It is important that people know why you live the way you do and for the blessed hope that is in you. Let them know you live for Jesus and not Satan.

Romans 10:17
So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Hebrews 4:12
For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Jesus said:

John 14:15
If ye love me, keep my commandments.

John 14:21
He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

John 15:17 These things I command you, that ye love one another.

Matthew 24:14
And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.

Mark 16:15
And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

Luke 24:47
And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

Peace be with you

Your question has the answer of what you regard as witnessing,
that being (boiled down) the golden rule
Love one another
so....if we do not love one another, thus witnessing about Jesus, no we are not sharing His love.
A good Christian gives Jesus the credit for there ability to love, so when we love in difficult situations, and people wonder how we can, we give Him the credit, and then His Love is shared fully.
Not for our Glory but His.
We bear His name, and we are a peculiar people, so we Will stand out whether we want to or not.
there were times when He was about His deity, and times when He let folks come to there own conclusions, we are wise to follow His example.

If you show others the love of Christ through your actions then that will sometimes mean a lot more to them then sitting down and telling them about the life of Christ. I was in Mississippi after Katrina working on cleaning up and what not. Every night there was a speaker at Katrina's Kitchen- he made the comment that the world is tired of hearing about Jesus and now they want to see him. Besides that I think that people are more open to little things like telling someone you will pray for them or things of that nature then huge sermons on how they will burn.

It is the responsibility of every Christian to witness about Jesus. But witnessing doesn't necessarily mean talking about Him. The most powerful witness a Christian can give is the way he/she lives his/her life. A famous quote from Saint Francis sums this up eloquently - "Preach the Gospel at all times. Use words if necessary".

I witness through my actions and through loving people with the love of Jesus. If I was in people's faces all the time about my faith, it would drive them away. That wouldn't be very loving now, would it?

Being more verbal might be your calling, but it isn't mine. Please don't guilt people. It is not a good way to teach them how to truly follow Jesus.

Sometimes by sharing the love we remain quiet. In case you hadn't noticed, it was the WORKS of Jesus that caught the attention. Show yourself to be a Christian and people will begin to understand. Then you can tell them. Sometimes the only mirror of God there is, is us. If we don't first SHOW God's love, how can they SEE God's love?
ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS.

Edit: Who is the 'real' witness...the lost or us?

We should be witnessing about God's love for us through the example of Jesus Christ. By following his life course, we glorify God and show appreciation for the Christ as 1John 4:10 states.

Amen. We should be , you are right. And I believe if a Christian lives according to GODS laws then in a sense we are witnessing. People can learn Thur the values of others. So if we could get others to live accordingly then we could be witnessing to them without them rebelling.

YES, "witnessing" is far less effective than "living as an example"
People will tend to follow a good example than listen to preaching - walk the walk- save the talk for yourself
unless someone asks you
Otherwise it comes off as invasive and pushy.

Show Love in your actions towards others, with out expectations.
Acts of Love IMHO should be done without the need for recognition of it. Otherwise it is an ego based need - "look how wonderful I am" kinda mentality.
Do something nice for someone anonymously -

" a life of "words" and not of "deeds" is like a garden full of weeds"

yah, i love everyone, i share my experiences (witnessing) to everyone regardless of their religion (as long as they are okay with me). problem number one: not everyone's keen on hearing someone's witnessing. so, i let my faith shine to others. how? i do good deeds. then, some people would hopefully say this, "Hey this person has a good character. maybe he's a christian." and hopefully they would be more interested to be christians too. now, that way i can show everyone what it means to be a christian in another way while avoiding piling up pride onto myself.

is it okay to do that? =D
