We have a lab, which I'm allergic to, every time I pet her or get close to her my eyes start itching and I start sneezing. But we also have a dauchsund mix. I snuggle with him all the time and it never bothers me. Why?

The lab is a long-haired dog and probably puts out more dander which you're probably allergic too. The dauchsund mix is probably a short hair and they put out less dander.
Sometimes people with pet allergies can better tolerate short-haired animals than long-haired. My brother-in-law is severely allergic to cats and is also allergic to dogs but has a worse reaction to long-haired ones.

The answer is most definitely! There is something about labs that can cause allergic reactions. They are big shedders of fur and dander. Brushing the coat can help some, vacuuming and dusting often can eliminate some of the problem. There are some products that you can buy at pet supply stores that claim to reduce the allergens, but I haven't had great success with them. I would limit my snuggling with the lab and wash and change clothes after a prolonged period of contact. If your allergies are really bad, you might consider having allergy shots to reduce your sensitivity. Good Luck!

I would say because the lab sheds more than the dachshund mix. Of course, I don't know what the little dog is mixed with.

Your family may want to brush the lab more often, and wipe him with a damp cloth to cut down on the dander and loose fur.

Good luck!
