I think it would be useful if those who rated answers explained their rationale, especially if its a negative rating. I would hate to think anyone would give an answer a bad rating just for spite.

I tend to agree. People should be able to explain why the feel what they feel and do what they do. People who can't explain themselves live their lives on auto-pilot and are frankly 'less than' the rest of us.

If I had to explain why I rated an answer negatively, I'd spend most of my time correcting answers than answering questions.

We could and I sometime do give comments on incorrect answers that preceed mine. You can post an answer, and go back and edit later if need be.

Welcome to YA. There are just so many things that you have to ignore to enjoy yourself here. Negative ratings is just one of them. I hope you can overlook some folks who think it is funny to do things like that. Some of us call them TROLLS. They slink around from question to question giving Thumbs Down for no reason. Most of us just ignore them and they go away.

out of all the answers, the best one might be ignorant, partially wrong, or they might have said something completely off topic. the quality of the answer.
