People always assume that they're doing it for the money, and decide to 'tell them off' for not thinking about loving the child?
For heavens sake, yes, you absolutely should be doing it for love, and I'm fairly sure that the majority of foster parents, just like the majority of ANY parents, are doing it for love not money.
But the fact is, it costs money to raise a child! Sometimes people are in a very hard financial position, and need to know if foster care would even be viable!
Why are people so judgemental?

I know, I was a foster kid myself.
I still talk to my foster mom, who was thinking about going back to fostering, and she has to add up can she afford to do it?
I get ticked when people think so many bad things about others when they hear the words foster, whether foster kid or foster parent.
If people could get rich doing it more would do it,
and if those who do it got rich from it, would that be so bad?
why does something have to keep you broke to be a good act?

Honestly Kit you're the only one who knows your heart and why you do things. Who cares about everybody elses thoughts on it? It's THEIR problem, If I were you I wouldn't even give them a chance to blow hot air your way, just walk away. You know that raising a child costs money and anyone with half a brain would know that raising a decent child today takes alot of time and love and tears if you are doing it right. It's all the more harder to raise a foster child, because most of the kids, if not all who come into your home will have deep emotional scars and issues, and honestly that takes a special person that God has chosen to do this. Anybody can be a parent/foster parent, but to to actually devote yourself and your time and love to a child , that takes alot of heart. God bless!

Don't let them get to you. The fact is most people are ignorant of the foster care experience. The see it as simply bringing in some poor little helpless orphan which will enrich your life beyond the value of money. Part of this is true. But what they don't see are the behavioural problems and emotional issues that these kids have and that have to be looked after and dealt with by you. Foster children are actually special needs children. They require alot more than food and shelter.
Don't expect any understanding from people outside the fold.

You do not need to be financially stable to be a foster parent. You simply need to have a good heart and love children and help them develop a good foundation and believe me no amount of money can do that. The people that reply with negativity are not thinking of the child they are thinking that you want money when they don't realize that you don't get much for taking care of a foster child. Parenting is not a paying Job.

Personally, if I ever did foster care I would have to make sure it provided me with a little extra $. Not that I am greedy, but I have thought about doing this to stay home with the children and give them all of the attention they need. I couldn't do this unless the allowance was good enough. I don't think of it as selfish, just sensible. And people who do are more than likely not foster parents and can look upon and judge people as they please.

I'm sure that everyone that "Told you off" has never even THOUGHT about ever becoming a foster parent. My mom's cousin and his wife were foster parents and they often dug into their own pockets to provide for their foster kids because what the state provides is not NEAR enough. I don't remember how much it was, but then it was back in the early 1980s in Washington state.

i think you are doing a wonderful thing and if someone cannot see that then it is there problem! there is nothing wrong for accepting money to make a foster child's life a little more comfortable. keep up the wonderful work : )

Unless you are very rich, fostering for free is not an option. It cost as much to give these kids a home as you get for doing it.

Probably because money seems to be the motivating factor for many. And it also seems that not all foster parents are any better than the natural parents. It only takes a few bad apples to give the rest a bad name.

I think those people are just showing their true colours. It's probably because the first thing they would think about, how much money they would get paid, so they assume everyone else is like them.
