I really need to work on forgiveness, I have a justice prophet type personality, not a prohet, and I hold grudges for ions, and I read this today and I just don't know how to sincerely in my heart do forgiveness. My language of forgiveness is that I want to hear that they won't do it again. But like in a rape case if they guy isn't caught you'll never hear it. so ?I have not been raped, but it puts it out there.
Here is what the daily reading said:
Maybe forgiveness is ultimately about me and about you, it's about us. Because when I forgive somebody and I set them free, it's like I'm really setting myself free. Forgiving is an action; it's something you do.
So may you forgive as you've been forgiven. May you give to others what's been given to you. May you set someone free and find out that it was you, and may you do it today, because you might not have the chance tomorrow.

thank to Martin I found this commentay on his verse and i can be like a child so this helps like huge:
The importance of humility.
Christ spoke many words of his sufferings, but only one of his glory; yet the disciples fasten upon that, and overlook the others. Many love to hear and speak of privileges and glory, who are willing to pass by the thoughts of work and trouble. Our Lord set a little child before them, solemnly assuring them, that unless they were converted and made like little children, they could not enter his kingdom. Children, when very young, do not desire authority, do not regard outward
distinctions, are free from malice, are teachable, and willingly dependent on their parents. It is true that they soon begin to show other dispositions, and other ideas are taught them at an early age; but these are marks of childhood, and render them proper emblems of the lowly minds of true Christians. Surely we need to be daily renewed in the spirit of our minds, that we ma

Forgiveness is a hard thing to do. As humans, you want retaliation and punishment, but we as Christians are called to forgive... turn the other cheek even.
The best advice I can give is read the book "What's So Amazing About Grace?" by Phillip Yancey. If Christians showed a lot more grace than we do now then the world would be better off.

Here is a link about forgiving or not:
http://bythebible.page.tl/Forgiveness-or-Not.htm
Basically, there is a simple procedure that we follow. Luke tells us to forgive all the time if the offending person repents.
In other words, if an offense is serious enough then confront the offender with this sin. If the individual repents (that may have different manifestations - simplest is an apology) then we must forgive that person.
However, forgiveness doesn't imply that you have to be buddies, it does imply that civility, common courtesy, and proper decor are observed.

The down to earth answer is the words of Jesus.
Mat 6:14 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:
Mat 6:15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
You can't get any more basic then that.
What happens when we have unforgiven trespasses?
May the Lord richly bless you.

Forgiving some one has nothing to do with being a fundamentalist christian. Truly, you really don't have that ability.... We don't need to go off and forgive people, as in as if they committed a sin There aren't any sins--There are incorrection actions, and then there is breaking the law.... There are acts of unkindnesses. You don't set anyone one 'free' by your "forgiveness" (that is crap) they were never captive to anything you hold. Get a grip.
Rather, people treat other people poorly because of poor upbringing, say, because they stole something, or the like, (our parents teach us that robbery is wrong) and when it gets around that someone is a jerk, his list of friends is shortens.... I don't forgive someone's nastiness toward me, I avoid them in the future---as do you. It has nothing to do with their being 'forgiven'... they aren't 'forgiven'... their lack of my company is their loss, not mine.
'Forgiveness'? ---As in "I forgive you" (what a pompous statement, anyway.....)About the only thing one forgives another is betrayal in a marriage.... and that often isn't 'forgiven'..... time heals the hurt a little, if the injured spouse chooses to remain. Often times the marriage doesn't survive a betrayal... Religion has nothing to do with it (only 20% of marriages with betrayal survive 2 years.)
So in summary, 'forgiveness' has nothing to do with freeing someone, from a pain that they caused, and for sure sets no one free (they were never captive--not even in their mind or imagination....).... And 'forgiving' isn't really an action, " I
forgive you." is crap. It is rather, "I choose not to make that nasty thing you did to us, in our relationship so large that we no longer can live together..... I choose to stay ---for now) and see if I can continue to care for you...Your stupidity cannot be 'forgive', I will try to overlook it for the good of , say, our children," or our families or whatever.
No one 'forgives' any one of anything... they simply choose to make is less of a big deal than something else might make it, because to do do reaps more benefits that not choosing to make is important.

My son in law died about 3 months ago . 5 years ago he left my daughter to manage 3 teenagers he was 13 years older than our daughter . He was not a very nice man. God gave me the strength to go see this man about 2 weeks before he died of stomach cancer. I asked God to help me with what I say to him . This is the result I held his hand and asked him if I could pray with him and he said yes I then asked God to forgive me if there was anything that I had done to offend this man and then asked God to ease his pain and accept him into his care I am told from that time on he tried very hard to get his affairs in order and to make it as easy s possible for his kids and his family including his former wife my daughter. God always has said ask and you will receive because in the asking you show your true belief ~~

Actually you already have the ability to forgive it is simply buried deep inside you behind all the layers of junk from the media and being cool etc. has put upon you.
You know how to forgive from the heart so just do it.

I don't understand why this is posed to Christians, I do not see any Christian language in this question,
what is this reading and your "type" you are talking about?
This is a difficult thing for most, for you it seems extra complicated, but I wish the other answerers realized
this isn't what Christianity teaches, compicating the basic truths untill someone feels pigeon holed and over burdened. This sounds wiccan to me

What you read pretty much seems to sum it up. Forgiveness is a choice. My Pastor says that holding a grudge against someone is like drinking some poison and hoping the other person will die. Your grudge doesn't hurt the other person, only your self. When you realize the grace that God extended to you by forgiving YOUR sins, then you are content to let God be the judge of others and if they have sinned to pray for their repentence and reconciliation to God while releasing the offense from your heart and mind.
Matthew 18:21 Then Peter came up and said to him, "Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?"
22 Jesus said to him, "I do not say to you seven times, but seventy times seven. 23 "Therefore the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants. 24 When he began to settle, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents. 25 And since he could not pay, his master ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made. 26 So the servant fell on his knees, imploring him, 'Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.' 27 And out of pity for him, the master of that servant released him and forgave him the debt.
28 But when that same servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii, and seizing him, he began to choke him, saying, 'Pay what you owe.' 29 So his fellow servant fell down and pleaded with him, 'Have patience with me, and I will pay you.' 30 He refused and went and put him in prison until he should pay the debt. 31 When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their master all that had taken place.
32 Then his master summoned him and said to him, 'You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. 33 And should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?' 34 And in anger his master delivered him to the jailers, until he should pay all his debt. 35 So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart."

Put the scripture down and take on your problems as a HUMAN BEING.
Pigeon-holing yourself as a justice-prophet type personality sounds like you have been to one too many fundamentalist camps or retreats. They have confused into thinking too much. Keep your own confidence and ask yourself (without asking God or thinking about scripture) what a moral human being would do.
Then do it.
Then do not thank God for giving you the strength to do whatever it is you did. You had the strength inside you. Believe in yourself and not what some preacher has told you that you are.
