When you ask a typical creationist what he thinks Evolution means, he'll say "Humans came from monkeys." or that Theories are the same as guesswork. I am asking this question to see how many people really know what Evolution is and what Evolutionary theory (The two are NOT the same) states. I'm bound to get some wild answers. So, please, take a crack at it.

Hint: Neither of these things is a matter of belief, any more than the natural phenomenon of gravity is. Also, one should not use in one's answer, the word proof. Science does not address things in these terms. Only Mathematics does that.

Excellent answers so far, except for the "Splitting hairs"one. Someone on Youtube did a very good analogy regarding cookies. If evolution is a cookie, then evolutionary theory is its recipe. Is it splitting hairs if you buy a cookie and someone hands you a recipe for cookies? Go to youtube and look up videos by Desertphile. Really great stuff.

The definition of evolution is a change in allele frequencies in a population over time.

A theory is "a coherent group of general propositions used as principles of explanation for a class of phenomena"

Evolutionary theory is then the group of propositions which explain why allele frequencies change in populations. These propositions include mutations, natural selection and genetic drift.
