They can't make anyone else but your mum (cos it was in her name) pay what she owes them. I moved into a house last year where there was an ntl modem left and we kept getting loads of 'final demand' letters thru addressed to previous tenants. I thought it might be a problem getting ntl in the same house because previous tenants owed them money but they said as it's in a different name it's a completely different account so it was fine. So you should be able to get the line re-activated if you do it in your name and they can't make you pay your mum's debt.

only your mum can reopen that line ....due to dpa reasons....however if you paid the bill then the line would be reactivated for your mum and your mum could ask for a transfer of responsibility on the account into your name this normally costs around 15 quid (make sure your there while she does this as they will need to speak to you as well....or you could simply say she don't live there anymore and open the line in either yours of your girlfriends name...its normally free activation as long as there is a bt line (normally 124.99) :P

Shame on your mum not payin her bills. You would have to check with BT but i think u are treated like a new tenant so it should not be a problem unless BT know u are related.Ring BT customer service on a friends phone. But you will need to pay a connection fee.

I guess without a doubt this will cause you problems. Why not open the account in your girlfriends name and be done with it.

Any outstanding bill has to be paid if you are the same family and name, there will also be a reconnection charge.

you can try saying you have moved in as new tenants but they may want prof of a tenancy agreement.
