In india the marriage is between two families. All the members of family of both bride and groom get to know each other, its not only bride and groom. This a suitable condition for stability of marriage.
Of course the bride and groom must know each other before marriage too. People have started accepting the idea.

You are right but it is also true that issues like compatibility can't be gone in to in one or two short meetings.Things are changing now and in urban areas at least, couple do meet before hand and try to get to know each other.

You said it - it is their custom. And, their rate of divorce is probably less than countries where we pick our own mate, too! Not saying I agree with this custom or anything...
