The greatest military leader in history has got to be Field Marshall Erin Rommel, nicknamed the "Desert Fox" by the British in Africa, during World War II !

And a close second, would be Lawrence of Arabia! (during World War I)

I would say Hannibal was the best, my opinion, i mean he nearly defeated The Roman Empire. There are lots of people saying Alexander the great, and i admit that he is great but over time he got cocky and thus was not a great military leader, he pushed his troops too far and wished to do the impossible (conquer the known world)

George Washington. Because after winning the revolution, he didn't do what others had done (become a dictator), he retired to civillian life until the People choose him to be President. He then refuse to run for a third term.

Funny you have no Americans on the list such as Washington, Eisenhower, Patton, etc.

Considering what he did with such a meager force against the Romans on their home turf - has to be Hannibal Barca. Except for some internal politics in Carthage the world may have been a very different place.
