Hi, I'm 29 and just now learning how to sight read. I never thought it would be so hard, but I'm thinking it will be worth it when I'm 50. Do you think I should learn the bass cleff as well as treble? Keep in mind I play guitar exclusively right now. Just learing the treble cleff is hard enough. What do you think?

I wouldn't worry about it. The lowest note you'll be playing on the bass clef is the higher E, which translates on the treble cleff to below the 2nd line below middle C. If you can handle that, just learn the treble clef. If you have a keyboard handy, I'd really recommend using a keyboard to learn the scale, because you'll understand it all so much better, visually, and will be able to put treble and bass clef together.

I would concentrate on treble clef. Once you get a firm understanding of reading in that clef and more experience on guitar you can add in bass clef. This would allow you to pick up bass guitar and add a lot of flexibility into your playing. But for now, I would focus on treble.

If you plan on sticking with just guitar, I wouldn't worry about it, honestly. One clef is confusing enough without mixing it up with another one. It wouldn't hurt to have it under your belt. But if you're just learning, keep it simple until you get a better grasp on treble, and on music reading in general. It's a whole nother language; a friend of mine once compared it to Russian, and he really hit the nail on the head.

If your only goal is to play guitar (and not bass, or other instruments) concentrate on the treble clef for now. You can add facility in the bass clef later if you need it.

It's a good idea to learn the F clef (or bass clef) because you may wish to participate in choral singing--that is, if you sing bass.

Knowing where the guitar notes are actually sounded will help you better explain to a student or friend wishing to learn guitar.

Anything educational accomplished will be to your benefit so I recommend total familiarity with the bass clef.
