Now, you missed the BEST part of the quote - psalm 23 that says "Because You are with me". (Old English: for Thou art with me.)

The YOU is God, the Almighty, the Creator of you and me. You will walk through dangers with God, therefore you do not fear the consequences of hard times in life.

"Valley of the shadow of death" = places in life where it is hard, but you do not die. Struggles with issues.

"Through" = you will walk all the way through, not get stuck in the middle.

"I fear no evil" = bad stuff and hard times are not to be feared but faced with COURAGE. Courage is fear that has said its prayers.

If God is not with me (I am a Christian and He IS with me) I have every chance of facing evil and succumbing to fear.

So, the quote in its entirety makes sense, but without the last words, I am not surprised that you had difficlty understanding it.

Hope that helped.

This is Psalm 23:4. In the American standard translation, it goes "Yea, thou I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me; Thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me"

What I believe it says is that although I may be in danger of dying, for whatever reason, I will not be afraid of death or of any evil that opposes me, becasue I know that God is with me.

An example might be of a soldier going into battle, who knows that he may die, but willingly goes because he knows God will protect him, or that he will go to heaven upon death.

Another example would be someone who stands up for a righteous, though unpopular belief (such as supporting black persons rights, when the possibility of being lynched was very real), once again, because he believes God will give him strength and/or protect him.

Hope that helps

I interpret this quote as placing an absolute trust on God's prescence and power for protection regardless of where you are walking.

As you make your way through life you are not afraid of anything, since you know you have the strength and support to overcome obstacles.
