What do you think about these plans for a selective amnesty for certain illegal immigrants who fit in to society? Before anyone sees red, it is only for a few, who have worked and would continue to work, who can speak English and meet other criteria.

Depends if they can support themselves. If they have needed skills and jobs and their own homes and aren't needing to take anything from the government then I don't see a problem with it, as long as its only for a few.
Whatever anyone says this country does not have the resources to support a major increase in young working age population, particularly those who are likely to need government help to support and house themselves.
My main worry would be that other immigrants would count on another amnesty happening in the future and would "push their luck".

Sounds like one of those crackpot ideas that the Lib Dems come up with occasionally, and I doubt very much that it will do them any favours.
I have absolutely nothing against immigrants coming to the UK as long as it is all legal and above board. Illegal immigrants, however, have committed a crime in entering this country and should all face the consequences.
Illegal immigration is a form of trespassing and should be treated as such. Just because one trespasser seems more desirable than another, doesn't make him or her any less a trespasser.
Also, wouldn't a selective amnesty amount to discrimination? All people who enter this country illegally should be treated the same, irrespective of their background, social skills, language, religion, e.t.c

Utterly ludicrous. Trust the LibDems to throw in the towel and admit defeat on the illegal immigration problem.
Britain needs to maintain a hardline policy regarding illegal immigration. These people take work from those who are legally entitled to be here; they form a shady underclass whose actions cannot be properly policed.
Illiegal immigration is a crime and should remain so for all who have committed it, with deportation as the immediate consequence.

We did that in the USA back in the Reagan days and now illegal immigration FAR surpasses legal immigration. They are all counting on another amnesty. I wouldn't recommend it. It turned out to be a big mistake.

The proposal doesn't go far enough - it would only work if it was extended to the whole population. So anyone who didn't speak English, wasn't loyal to the crown or wasn't prepared to work would have to leave; but everyone else could stay, regardless of race or background.

nope, ask italy hows it worked for them ?
they did one amnesty in the 70's and then had 6 more as the illegal immagrants knew they were a soft touch.
the liberal democrats also want never to send a woman to prison ever again no matter what her crime is.
no wonder no-one votes for them

I think they're planning to let the Scots remain in England after Scotland gets independence.

I'm sure that is what their marketing plan says - the language of the bill will probably be quite different.
