Allah سبحانه و تعالى says about Doomsday:
"when the earth hath taken on her ornaments and is embellished, and her people deem that they are masters of her, Our commandment cometh by night or by day and We make it as reaped corn as if it had not flourished yesterday."
How do you define: "ornaments and is embellished"? And do you think that condition happened or not yet?
Serious answers please...

Well, Lawrence I have always interpreted it as a sarcastic comment, which links perfectly with the second half of the verse. To me it means a time when people are smug in the world and they have set up monuments to themselves and other entities, landmarks and other things that are pleasing to them. When earth is perfect in the mind of man and seems invincible, the shallowness of man's delight will be brought forth in front of his eyes. This is what the second part means... "reaped corn".
As for your second question, I think we're almost there!
Bottomline: life is mortal and there awaits on you something much better. Live a good life but don't let it beguile you so that when the day comes, you are not of those taken by surprise.
Very good question.

Salam :) i'm a Muslim teen residing in Canada. I positioned on hijab alhamdullilah and it is for the main section generic here for the reason that i stay in an excellent city with a extensive Muslim inhabitants. I do get the few ignorant comments and idiots at college however who ask stuff like "yo have been given a bomb below there hahaha". however the toughest section is being diverse out of your acquaintances. Being a Muslim, events, alcohol courting boys donning revealing clothing etc is haram, and on a similar time as i do no longer want to try this besides, it is a splash awkward to ought to describe why i do no longer do it to those who evaluate it in basic terms an factor of being a young person and its common to them. Muslims residing in Muslim countries truthfully have it less difficult while it includes setting up in. And with food it is a splash complicated yet I consistently attempt to envision the label if i'm undecided of the aspects. yet i does no longer wanna be the different faith no rely how confusing it gets and how diverse i've got self assurance from each and every physique else, i'm happy to be Muslim :)

Asalamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatu...... I always think it's best to go to the Tafsir (commentary) first. You'll find it should answer your questions insha'Allah.
Here is the Tafsir from Ibn Kathir on Ayah 10:24 -
Allah the Almighty has set an example of the similitude of the life of this world, its glitter and the swiftness of its passage, likening it to the plant and vegetation that Allah brings out from the earth. This plant grows from the water that comes down from the sky. These plants are food for people, such as fruits and other different types and kinds of foods. Some other kinds are food for cattle such as clover plants (i.e. green fodder for the cattle) and herbage etc.
(until when the earth is clad in its adornments ,)
(and is beautified ) meaning, it became good by what grows on its hills such as blooming flowers of different shapes and colors.
(and its people think...) those who planted it and put it in the ground,
(that they have all the powers of disposal over it) to cultivate it and harvest it. But while they were in that frame of mind, a thunderbolt or a severe, cold storm came to it. It dried its leaves and spoiled its fruits. Allah said:
(Our command reaches it by night or by day and We make it like a clean-mown harvest, ) it became dry after it was green and flourishing.
(as if it had not flourished yesterday!) as if nothing existed there before. Qatadah said: "As if it had not flourished; as if it was never blessed.'' Such are things after they perish, they are as if they had never existed. Similarly, the Hadith,
(A person who led the most prosperous life in this world will be brought up and dipped once in the Fire. He will then be asked: `Have you ever found any good or comfort' He will reply: `No.' And a person who had experienced extreme adversity in this world will be brought up and dipped once in the bliss (of Paradise). Then he will be asked: 'Did you ever face any hardship or misery' He will reply: `No.') Allah said about those who were destroyed:
(So they lay (dead), prostrate in their homes; as if they had never lived there.)﴿11:67-68﴾ Allah then said:
(Thus do We explain the Ayat. ..) We do explain the proofs, and evidences, in detail
(for the people who reflect.) so they may take a lesson from this example in the swift vanishing of this world from its people while they are deceived by it. They would trust this world and its promises, and then it unexpectedly turns away from them. This world, in its nature, runs away from those who seek it but seeks those who run away from it. Allah mentioned the parable of this world and the plants of the earth in several Ayat in His Noble Book. He said in Surat Al-Kahf:
(And put forward to them the example of the life of this world: it is like the water (rain) which We send down from the sky, and the vegetation of the earth mingles with it, and becomes fresh and green. But (later) it becomes dry and broken pieces, which the winds scatter. And Allah is able to do everything.) (18:45) He also gave similar examples in both Surat Az-Zumar ﴿39:21﴾ and Surat Al-Hadid ﴿57:20﴾.

The exact translation of the entire verse comes to:
The likeness of the life of the present is as the rain which We send down from the skies: by its mingling arises the produce of the earth- which provides food for men and animals: (It grows) till the earth is clad with its golden ornaments and is decked out (in beauty): the people to whom it belongs think they have all powers of disposal over it: There reaches it Our command by night or by day, and We make it like a harvest clean-mown, as if it had not flourished only the day before! thus do We explain the Signs in detail for those who reflect.
I can tell by reading the beginning of the verse that this is a parable. It is likening the life of earth like rain that has flourished plants but with Gods will, the plants will look like theyve never flourished. This bit is referring to the way God can make things happen. There is no amount of concrete events in this verse and you cant really say: oh such and such happened and it will happen again. And I highly doubt you can tell when judgement day is coming by attributing this verse to our modern day.

To my intrepertation, it's happened all the times.
Some people think that what they have got as a success come from their own hands . Lots of people think they can do what they like, success laid in their action.
It's a day today life. It's happened all the times in this world.
In a small scale or big scale.
Private life or community's life.
One day they all have party, on the way home one of them hit by a car then dead.
That's a simple sample.
It's to remind people that we actually not in control so we have to surrender and to give submission to God, the Owner of every thing.
Story behind Al Fill is also a good example.
It's to remind us to be alert all the time at the existence of God.
That's my interpertation.

To understand this one has to go one verse back and then the meaning of this whole is apparent. This verse pertains to all the times..past..present and future, and we should learn from this.
The ornaments and is embellished ...means adornment with the natural beauty of this mother earth ...the ornaments of this earth are its pure nature in the form of snow clad mountains, rain and snow, meadows. forests, rivers, all vegetation, etc and all kinds of species.
I do not think this has yet happened in present time.

The Parable of this Life

Invitation to the Everlasting Gifts that do not vanish
Allah said:
(And Allah calls to the Abode of Peace) When Allah mentioned the swiftness of this world and its termination, He invited people to Paradise and encouraged them to seek it. He called it the Abode of Peace. It is the Abode of Peace because it is free from defects and miseries. So Allah said:
(Allah calls to the Home of Peace and guides whom He wills to the straight path.) It was narrated that Jabir bin `Abdullah said: "Allah's Messenger came out one day and said to us:
(I have seen in my sleep that it was as if Jibril was at my head and Mika'il at my leg. They were saying to each other: `Give an example for him.' He said: `Listen, your ear may listen. And fathom, your heart may fathom. The parable of you and your Ummah is that of a king who has built a house on his land. He arranged a banquet in it. Then he sent a messenger to invite the people to his food. Some accepted the invitation and others did not. Allah is the King and the land is Islam, the house is Paradise and you Muhammad are the Messenger. Whosoever responds to your call enters Islam. And whosoever enters Islam enters Paradise. And whosoever enters Paradise eats from it.) Ibn Jarir recorded this Hadith. It was also reported that Abu Ad-Darda' said that Allah's Messenger said:
(Two angels descend every day in which the sun rises and say that which all Allah's creatures would hear except Jinn and humans: `O people! Come to your Lord! Anything little and sufficient is better than a lot but distractive.') And He sent this down in the Qur'an when He said:
("Allah calls to the Abode of Peace''.) Ibn Abi Hatim and Ibn Jarir recorded this.
