If your after scenery and pure beauty here are some options:
1. Great Barrier Reef (QLD)
2. Uluru- outback (NT)
3. Broome (WA)
4. Whitsunday Islands (QLD)
5. Fraser Island (QLD)
5. Great Ocean Road (VIC)
If you are limited to one particular area (Australia is large) I would focus on the state of Queensland (QLD). This is probably the most popular for vacations, Australians and intermational visitors. Going to Fraser Island is an amazing experience. It's the world's largest sand island and 4wd access is required on the beaches. Scuba diving/snorkling the Great Barrier Reef/ Whitsundays is amazing.
If your after action I would goto Melbourne or the Gold Coast. Plenty of things to do there. Melbourne is renowned for great food, fashion and is a sports mad city. Gold Coast is somewhat like Miami I guess, great beaches, high rise buildings, theme parks etc.

I would Suggest Go to Broome...
The things that describe it are Beaches, Very Warm Weather, Shopping and Wonderful Holiday Destination.
I like it because it isnt very big but is Beautiful.
You can catch a flight from MELBOURNE, SYDNEY, PERTH...Basically anywhere if you travel QANTAS Domestic.
If you love big cities... I would suggest...MELBOURNE!!!
We have wonderful Gardens, Theatre, Arts, Sports, Music, Vibrancy and Melbourne is just a Beautiful Place...
So Basically
if you want a Laid Back yet Adventurous holiday, Choose Broome.
If you want a Action-Packed Holiday but filled with the Arts...Go Melbourne

Western Australia is often overlooked by the common tourist, as being too far out of the way. But it is a beautiful state! My favorite place in WA to holiday is Rottnest Island.

depends what you want - Melbourne has culture and shopping but crap weather; Queensland (esp gold coast) has good weather, beaches and amusement parks; Kakadu for Indigenous culture; Barossa Valley for wine and...my fav. (esp cos it's my home town) SYDNEY! has alittle bit of everything (except Aboriginal experience, but some people will say go to Redfern for that)
