if your gonna tell me to buy a book don't answer . i just bought a 91 nissan pathfinder 4 by 4 ,however it don';t want to stay out of 4 hi. i can get it out of 4 hi but it seems to put itself right back in it.

Does it stay in 2 hi? some times the rubber boot gets so stiff it pushes the lever take the consol cover off and the metal ring holding the boot down turn the knobs off boot removed and looking on the ground from inside see if the transfer case now shifts fron 4 low to 4 high neutral to 2 high. Get a new rubber boot soon because it is getting harder and harder to find parts for 17 year old Pathfinders and trucks.

are you sure there is no locking on the lever
that might the problem
or maybe try braking and tehn shifting
