When the blood is withdrawn from a vein and placed in a plain tube, it clots in 5-20 minutes. In normal circumstances, it will start to clot in less than 5 minutes time. Blood could clot in the syringe in a matter of 30-60 seconds. In circumstances that factors affecting the blood clotting are present such as taking medications such as blood thinners, blood may start to clot later than 5 minutes.

There are external factors that can also affect the time of clotting of the blood in a plain tube. The temperature, handling of the tube, and the manner of collecting the blood are some of the factors than in a way can affect the clotting of the blood specimen in general. The general health conditions of the person who had the blood extracted also got a role.

Some glass collection tubes are coated with silicone to retard clotting. The blood contains, believe it or not, a factor in the cascade called "glass factor". Early on it was discovered that blood clotted faster in a glass tube. An Ivy bleeding time normally is about 5-7 minutes. In a non-siliconized tube its about 4-5, in a siliconized tube without other anticoagulants about 8 minutes.

5 minutes if you're lucky, 15 minutes if you're on blood-thinners.
