So many practical answers & any one should do just fine,my answer however should provide an interesting insite into coconut use in India, where as a coconut producing nation we use a lot both for cooking as well as in rituals & cermonies, also a part of offerings at temples,We have a knack of tightly grasping a husked coconut in the hand, lifting the hand high for leverage & coming down hard on a very hard surface like a stone or granite platform,in just one hefty knock it splits open in two equal halves.

Step 1:
Rub the coconut on your belly for 32 seconds. No more, no less.

Step 2:
Sing it your favorite song.

Step 3:
Drill a hole in it big enough for human ... uhh .. fingers.... Ya do this with your teeth, of course.

Step 4:
Stick your favorite finger in the hole. (It doesn't have to be a hand finger!)

Step 5:
Lift the coconut with your finger, and spin it around!!!!

Step 6:
After the spinning is done, it will fall off, crack open, and you'll have fresh coconut!

Good luck.

you could get a cleaver or use the blunt side of a big knife and whack it right in the middle where you see a faint line on the coconut. Its actually easy to get one open if you hit it just right.

assuming it is like it comes off the tree, you use a hatchet.

If it is like it comes in a grocery store, you use an ice pick if you want to get the coconut milk. After you drain it, you hit it with a hammer, but put something like a towel around it, to hold it in place without risking your fingers.

After you get down to the inner part. use a small knife and start drilling through one of the black dots at one end. then drain the juice. then whack the nut on something hard.

the tough outside part is the toughest bit. once you get down to the bean looking hairy part, use the dull edge of a knife and give it a few good whacks.
