I think the idea of avoiding it like the plague is a bit 'rich' but Sydney is far more hustle and bustle than the rest of the Country. It's more dangerous, congested and arrogant than anywhere else. But equally it can be quite an exciting city - up there with the most interesting cities in the world.
It's a place I'd never want to live in again (I've spent about four years of my life there), but its a great place to visit. The Harbour is beautiful, the city is exciting and some of the attractions like Darling Harbour, Taronga Zoo, the Opera House and many of the National Parks within a very short drive of the city are astounding - best in the world in some cases!
Most of the rest of Australia runs at a slower pace so those who are not from Sydney see it as push-push-push, noise and danger.
No reason to avoid it - just make sure you see other parts of the country that would give you a totally different perspective to Sydney.

In Sydney you can enjoy the normal beauty. From unspoilt beaches to public gardens and, of course, the shining harbour, Sydney is just a city worth visited and with hotelbye you may have the chance to do that. The Sydney Harbour Bridge or "Coathanger," while the locals call it's one of many areas you should not skip in your trip here. This place was the city's best-known landmark prior to construction of the Opera House. Supported by massive double piers at each conclusion, it absolutely was built-in 1932 and stays the world's largest metal arch bridge, joining the harbour's north and south shores in one single curve climbing 134 metros over the water. Along its period work two railway lines and eight counters for road traffic, the way of which is often different in accordance with traffic flow. Also, to learn about the fascinating record of the bridge's structure you are able to look at the museum in the south-eastern pier.

Don't know how many Australians you've spoken to, but I can't imagine a majority telling you this. Sydney is a beautiful harbor city with plenty to see and do. It CAN be expensive,
It's not for everyone, and it is not too much different from any other major city in the world but there's no reason to avoid it.
I'm not from Sydney, have lived there and wouldn't choose to live there again, but I visit often & enjoy it every time.
Really depends what you're looking for in a destination.

Sydney has a large Chinese population, hailing from China, HongKong and Singapore. Many Chinese live in Ashfield, Summer Hill, Epping, Carlingford, Beecroft, and Chatswood. Generally speaking, the North Shore is considered "middle class" and populated by professional people. Epping, Chatswood and Beecroft are in the North Shore, Carlingford is more North west. Ashfield and Summer Hill is in the Inner West of Sydney and many Chinese who live in these suburbs come from Beijing and Shanghai. All of the suburbs listed above are considered safe, as are those on your list, with the possible exception of Lidcombe if you're wanting to use train travel. Good luck.

Don't avoid Sydney at all! It's a beautiful city with lots to see and do.
You can have a lot of fun in Sydney, and it caters to tourists with lots of activities and events.
However, like any city, it has some rough characters, and you need to be aware of your personal safety and your possessions. If you avoid dark alleys and wandering about blind drunk, you can avoid most hassles.
If you plan to see Australia, do make Sydney part of your itinerary!
Cheers :-)

I don't see any reason why you should avoid Sydney. Its a beautiful place and in fact if you haven't been here, you're missing a lot of our beautiful beaches and scenic spots. However, of course, like any other place, there may be places to avoid like those where a lot a crimes happen...

Can't answer this from personal experience but a friend of mine lived there for a year or two.
From his experience he found it to be expensive, quite a high crime rate and basically, in his words, 'not all it's cracked up to be'. His quote - not mine.
He also found that work was hard to come by - unlike this country, they look after their own first and the rates of pay when he did get a job were poor to awful and not enough to live on.

For the same reason a lot of people avoid London. It's loud, polluted, crowded, unfriendly people. They feel the bad points about the city outweighs the good points it has.

"They" say it's mainly populated by latte-sipping arseholes, but you get arrogant arty-farty types everywhere. I'd say people like to avoid the traffic, crime rates, house prices and such. It's the place to go if you want to pose in front of famous Aussie landmarks though.
