Why can't we have faith in people and the world we live in? Religion just seems like an out dated form of control to me, our governments take care of the sheep herding these days, don't they?, should they?

batgirl2good : I base my life on truth & reason, be good to others and yourself. Most religion requires "blind" faith, example, does God exist? I say No. To say yes would need "blind" faith.......i see no reason in this.

If it makes you happy, thats cool. I am not attacking religions.......

A good friend of mine keeps telling me that we all have individual perceptions of reality. There are two key ingredients - what we know is true and what we hope is true. Some people have a perception of reality made up mostly of things that they hope are true.

Tradition, family and social obligations, peer pressure, the need for hope, faith, comfort it brings, a unchanging world view, strength in numbers.....things many people value, but not me.

It takes courage to leave religion behind.

Governments don't take care of anyone except those who finance them. Actually they take advantage of the sheep. Governments are initially set up to help the people, but once they take control they turn into monsters and the enemy.

"Why can't we have faith in people and the world we live in? "

Take a look around. We can't have faith in this.

Some people need faith to feel like things can only get better - that there's some reason to be here, some thing to live for. And hence faith.

Many people want to belong. It does not matter what they belong to. Religion gives them a club just like any ideology, it takes a strong person to remain outside.

I think that it is possible that people need to have some part of their life that is irrational.

This is expressed in many ways: religion, gambling, risk taking (drugs, alcohol, dangerous sports ...), artistic endeavour etc.

Most of these are benign, but when they become a danger to others you get problems.

"Necessity" is not the issue when it comes to spiritual reality. God exists regardless of whether we feel like we need Him or not. But the things of this world can't tell us why we're here--as the bumper sticker says, "He who dies with the most toys is still dead." God is real whether or not we want to acknowledge that He is real, and at some point in each of our lives He will try to get our attention to bring us into a personal and significant relationship with Him. We can go through life thinking that God is not "necessary," but we will never understand what this life is about unless we have a reference point outside of our mere physical existence. What hope is there in assuming that this life is all there is? That to me seems like the worst form of hopelessness. But I have seen the reality of God in my own life and have found a hope and a purpose far beyond anything in this world. It has nothing to do with "organized religion" (what's "disorganized religion"?) and everything to do with personally knowing, enjoying and spending eternity with the God who made us.

Note to Thy Word Is Truth: Do we really want to insult people we're trying to talk to about God's reality and God's love?

Most of them can't help it. As children, they were subjected to long-term, dedicated religious indoctrination... i.e., brainwashing. This is very difficult to overcome, even as an adult... particularly since the intellectual tools necessary to overcome it (critical thinking skills, formal logic) are not taught in the US public school system.
