Is there a "Force Recon contract" that is something like the Army’s 18 X-Rays for SF candidates, or the Ranger option for the Ranger wannabes. Meaning that there’s no guarantee that you will get selected, but you are given the chance to “try out” after boot camp and AIT. If no then what is the road to becoming a Force Recon

In the past Force has had regular screenings (every few months). Every Marine going through SOI (School of Infantry) is given a chance if he meets the requirements: 105 GT score, a 1st class PFT and a 1st or 2nd class swim qual.

The need is such now, however, that applicants are no longer subjected to the screening. As long as you meet the requirements on paper and your command approves, you can be transfered pre-BRC (Basic Reconnaissance Course) and see if you have what it takes. Upon completion of pre-BRC you move on to BRC at the end of which your MOS changes from 03** to 0321 Reconnaissance Man. You will then go to an assortment of schools (jump, water survival, SERE, etc.) where you will recieve your special training.

So while I don't believe you can be guaranteed anything in your contract, as long as you sign up for infantry, you'll get a chance.

By the way, if they go back to doing the "indoc," you have to swim 20m underwater, tread water for 30 min, swim 500m then run a 1st class PFT which includes a 3 mile run, pull ups and crunches. If you do all this satisfactorily, you go to pre-BRC.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

Assignments for Recon are made after the training based on performance.

no, no contract. everyone here is correct except you dont get to go "force" until you are an NCO. you can, however, go "regular" recon.
the differance being training and missions.
