For weights less than 1 kilo, Italians often use the measure 'etto' which is 100 grammes (from hectogram.) So, an alternative for one pound would be approx. cinque etti = 500g. Useful in the deli hall where you may only want small portions. As a rough guide, un etto = 100g = 3 ounces approx.
