trouble with file names on digi camera?

I have a canon ixus and tried to use the "zoom browser" to change the names of the files because it defaults to date which is rubbish - but I can't get it to change anything. I am getting angrier and angrier. Please help a desperate woman.

Firstly, download the pictures into a computer. From there, there are many options to "rename" pictures. Open the folder where u downloaded the pictures. Select thumbnails to display it in small pictures. You can highlight and click it once or right click the file & chooce "rename". Do it one by one so u can rename the files exactly as u wanted it to be named.
