A few months ago the Army Times ran an article that stated that 38% of the Army has not been deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan.

Less than 20% of the Army consists of combat soldiers who do the daily patrols and conduct combat missions. The rest support them in some way or another (administration, medical, intelligence, logistical, mechanical, etc). For every combat soldier there are 8 to 12 soldiers who support them. There are many jobs that keep soldiers out of harms way. **This statement is not meant to downplay the non-combat soldiers who find themselves in ambushes while on convoy or who receive mortar attacks while on their Forward Operating Bases.**

In the US there are many training posts that require a great many soldiers to train and sustain the force. They also require much of the same support I mentioned earlier. Many soldiers also directly support the war effort from the US. We can't send everyone overseas.

Hopefully this has helped to clear up a few misconceptions.

Because it is imposable to be in the US military right now and not deploy. There is only a few MOS'es that are not needed in Iraq right now and the odds are very high that you will deploy if you join or are in the military now. If you are in the Army or joining the army it is very likely that you will do at least one rotation to Iraq. It is so important that it is tracked on you Enlisted record brief ERB. i don't know about the other services but as far s the Army goes if you are in it you are going it is just a mater of time. they are actively moving soldiers that have not been to units tat are going so that it will give the soldiers that have just returned more time at home. The Army Times has reported that All services are also do the same thing to insure the load is shared by all service members. So don't get it twisted if you have not been deployed yet don't thing you are safe.

people are probably paying a lot more attention to the military propaganda since 9/11 and don't realize that there was just as much before hand. When you sign up for the military, you do the job they think you can fill best, and for a lot of people, that is not combat. Some people serve in combat for more that one tour, and others never go over.

A lot of people assume this is going on because they dont know how the military works. The chances are great that you will be send to Iraq or Afghanistan but it doesnt automatically happen. The bottom line is that people just dont know....I have been in 14 years and my mother thought that is how it works.

There are a lot of closed-minded people out there in the big bad world who tend to gobble up everything the media feeds them.

In reality, they have no idea what the military is or how the military operates. For the past 6 years, they've only seen the MILITARY vs. IRAQ, and nothing else.

There is a war going on, and you increase your odds a few hunderd percent for sure. I would say the chances are very good that you could show up in Iraq if you join today.

I spent 20 years in uniform.

Because they have no idea what the military is or how it works, but they have no problem pretending they do.
