Trick question! The answer is Evander Holyfield in 1999, but Lewis never actually WON his first title. The title was handed to him incidentally by the always-corrupt WBC after Riddick Bowe dumped the useless belt in the garbage, relinquishing the title by refusing to honor to meet the mandatory challenger (Lewis) because there were more lucrative fights elsewhere. Lummox Lewis never earned it in the ring. He's was a paper champion. To be the man, you have to beat the man.
Evidently, some people are under the assumption that Riddick Bowe was ducking Lewis. This is flatly untrue. I wish they would have fought because Bowe would have exposed Lewis for the average fighter that he was (much like Oliver McCall did months later). There's no way in this world or any other than Riddick Bowe was afraid of Lummox Lewis.
