I moved to Las Vegas at the end of July with a roomate . I am unemployed and I came here with $46000 cash and no debts and an old car. I promised myself that I soon I came here that I was going to look for a job and start working. Well, since Ive come here Ive been taking frequent trips to the casinos and I have won close to $5000 in less than a month playing blackjack. I am getting real lazy in looking for a job because of the fast money that Im making. Im kind of scared because Im not sure if Im going in the wrong direction and Im not really hooked to gambling but I just love the easy money and its so convenient. You can set your own hours and be your own boss. There are no managers or supervisors to report to and all the money is tax free. Is gambling a career that I could pursue ?

Some people pursue gambling as a career in Las Vegas, but for the vast majority it's not an activity you can do on a regular basis and expect to win.

Winning in most cases is that you didn't lose all of your money or you break even. As long as you keep playing, the casinos know that you will lose it back plus some. In fact, the best thing that can happen to you from their perspective is that you win, because they know you will come back.

Two things to think about:

1. They didn't build one of the largest gaming meccas in the world by the casino's losing.

2. Next time you visit a casino, look at how many people are playing compared to how many people there are working at the cashier. (the ratio is probably 1000 to 1).

Lived in Vegas for 4 years and seen quite a few people fall to the vices. Best advice is to go with your original plan and get a job as soon as possible.

Nikolas and LakeLasVegas both gave excellent answers.

The only thing I'll add is that professional gamblers say gambling is "the toughest way to make an easy living".

In any type of gambling, there will be enormous swings. You can easily go on a losing streak that lasts several months.

Even in poker, where a skilled player can win over the long run, there are ups and downs. Phil Ivey (one of the best players in the world) said he lost $276,000 in one night!

In blackjack, the casinos will get to know you. If you win too much, they will ban you from playing blackjack.

But remember, blackjack is a negative EV game. If you don't know what that means, you shouldn't try to make a living as a gambler.

Most casinos will simply ask you to leave if you can not produce an acceptable ID. They rarely call the police and have an underage person arrested. However a few years ago a 19 year old won a mega millions jackpot for around 13 million (don't remember exact amount) and they not only did not pay him the winning, they did have him arrested, so it is at their discretion. If you get away with gambling, low amounts would be no problem (under $1200) because the machines just print a ticket that you take to an automated kiosk to get the cash. If it is $1200 or over, you must provide an ID and social to get paid. If playing at the tables, that would be no problem because you just take the chips to the cage later to cash them in, and obviously your Friend could do that, but the cage cashiers would not ask for ID anyway for cashing chips. You will get ID'd for sure if you order alcohol, but they may not bother you on the machines. Tables will likely ask for ID more often as there are several pitt bosses in the center of the tables at all times. .

You can beat one deck blackjack if your card counting strategy and your play are near perfect. But casinos don't do one deck anymore because a few sharp blackjack players would be very bad for business. With four or more decks, you will probably eventually go broke with blackjack.

But poker at the tables is a different story. Poker is one of the few beatable games in casinos. But to beat the casino rake AND the other players, you have to play at a very high level. By the time you learned to play well enough, you will have lost your $50000.00. Instead of playing the high stakes at the tables, deposit a few dollars in an online poker account. You can play micro stakes to learn the game. But no, at the present time, you won't be able to sustain your life through casino games or poker. Get a regular job and take time to learn the game of poker. Work your way up from micro stakes to small stakes to mid stakes to high. This will be incredibly challenging but it is one of the few ways you could ever possibly profit from a casino game.
