what does "pretty sure" mean in a context such as ex: I am pretty sure that the computer is working.

It means that the person believes the thing to be true, but he or she is not entirely certain.

Example... you ask, "Does the computer work?"

I reply, "I am pretty sure that the computer is working."

So, I believe that the computer is working. However, I am not entirely certain. The computer may work. Or it may not. I think that it does, but it may not.

Using the phrase "pretty sure" allows me to be free from blame even if the computer does not work, in this example.

If I had been certain that the computer worked, I would have said, "Yes, the computer works." If I had been certain that it did not work, I would have said, "No, the computer does not work." I obviously did not know whether the computer worked or not, but I knew enough to make a guess that the computer did work, so I said I was "pretty sure".

I hope this makes sense.

May God bless you.

The phrase "pretty sure" means they don't know and don't want to bother going to the trouble of finding out.

Reasonably certain. It might not be working but I am pretty sure it is - say about 98% if you want to put a figure on it
