I have always heard when I was younger, that if you neutered a male dog before his first mating, it would make him mean. I love my dog but I need to neuter him because we will be living full time in a motor home and traveling a lot and I do not want the risk of him running away and getting in an accident or becoming lost. I understand they become more stay at home dogs after neutering. Any help would be appreciated. ~desertrat

Neutering your dog will be the best decision you make for him

1 it calms them down
2 it prevents testicular cancer
3 your dog will be more loving
4 you are stoping unwanted litters
lots of other reasons too but it'd take all day to list them

If every dog was mated before it was neutered think how many 1000's of unwanted puppies there would be in the pounds and how many millions of mean dogs there would be in the world.

All my dogs have been neutered the moment they started humping legs, toys, blankets etc.
My boys are not mean but in fact very loving and loyal dogs.

Just pop along to your vet and ask when thay can fit him in (as long as he is old enough)

neutering does not make a dog mean. I had my boy snipped at 5 months, and he's a sweet little cuddle bug. I take him to the nursing home I work at to visit with the residents.

Actually, an intact male tends to be more aggressive than a neutered male.. because of all the hormones!

That is an old myth.

Neutered dogs live longer, are less aggressive, don't mark your home as their territory with their urine and don't run off 2 miles away to a female dog in heat.

There are more positives, I just can't think of them now.

Many veterinarians are neutering puppies at 4 months of age and giving them their rabies vaccination along with their heart guard which protects them from fleas, tapeworms and heart worms.

Absolutely, have him neutered. There is no reason not to, and there are plenty of good reasons to have it done.

Yes, he will run off (or try to) if he's left unaltered. Any responsible owner should have his or her dog fixed to eliminate the possibility of an unintentional breeding.

Altering him will NOT make him mean ... quite the contrary. He will be a much calmer and more docile pet if he's neutered than if he's not!

Well,if he's neutered,he's not going to be mating at all! But,no,neutering him early will not make him mean,it will actually make him a nicer dog, with a more steady temperament and he will be less likely to roam. Also, less chance of testicular or prostate cancer and no contribution to the pet overpopulation.AND,no marking in your motor home!

Yes for sure they should be neutered before mating. At one time people used to believe not, but now the vets and everyone will tell you they should be neutered as soon as they are old enough.

Absolutely not true at all.. Neutering isn't going to make him mean.. Actually allowing him to breed is more likely to make him male dog aggressive than anything.
Neutering him, he isn't going to be smelling all those girls in heat, so he isn't going to wander off in search of girls.. He is far more likely to hang around home.. Neutering makes them far better pets because they tend to become more people dogs than dog dogs... Only have you to concentrate on.. not interesting in reproducing, etc...

If you do not neuter him he will run off at some truck stop and you may never get him back. Also, neutering makes dogs less mean, less aggressive.

my pets have always been great being fixed. never mated before or anything. neutering ur males calms them down and makes it so they dont become aggressive. the longer u wait the more of a chance he'll get aggressive.

It won't make him mean! That's a myth! If anything, it will calm him down, and he will be alot healthier in the long run! I would go ahead and have him neutered.
