How do we know it wasn't made up by a bunch of drunk guys? What if the people who were "inspired by God's words" were full of crap and the Bible is really a fiction made up by homeless guys?

The Bible has caused violence among people. We'd be better off without it.

i think it's because - this coming from an atheist - they have so little comprehension of the universe and the world, that they need some sort of understanding, a belief. to stop them from going insane.
but if you keep getting on every ones case you'll just look like a complete jerk.

Because human beings have a natural urge to want there to be something great and extremely important. Many always think either the worst will happen, or the best. When it comes to the big questions in life, religion is just a more appealing and interesting thing to believe than "we came from monkeys". Believing that when we die we go to the most amazing place in the universe is more appealing than "it's just like before you were born".

We crave for the truth, but when we can't find the answers to the big questions, we make up our own believing that it must be true, because you can't prove it wrong(although you often can). Even after some of these questions are answered through science, many religious folk are in too deep to see the often more-boring truth.

I'm being a bit broad here but there's so many ways to explain why people believe in religion and why religion is bullshit. I'll just stop now before My fingers get tired.

It is amazing to me that some say that it is a work of fiction - and I doubt that they have ever read it. Most often, it is only someone repeating what some other person said - and they didn't have a clue either. Prejudice (and willful ignorance) is a great time saver - at least you don't have to take the time to learn any facts.

By the way, there is at least one Web site where you can collect a lot of money (about $250,000) if you can prove in a court of law that your statement is true. Feel free to try. If you have the facts that no one else knows about - go ahead and go for it - the money will cover your court costs - if you win. Isn't it rather funny though, that similar offers have been available for many decades - yet there has not been any winners? I wonder why - not really!

Though it has existed for thousands of years, it is still true that: "Thy word is true from the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth for ever." (Psalm 119:160 - KJV). And those that come to the One it is written about - Christ, also find that His salvation is real and so is His forgiveness - if you will receive Him.

I don't know really. Over half of my family celebrate it, and I let them. Sometimes it DOES make people better and well-rounded. It gives some purpose in an otherwise, bland and scary world. That's just some of the good it can do.

Me personally? I stopped believing in God a year or two ago, but lately, I've been feeling like there just might be a God. I have great things that happen to me daily.

Do I celebrate the Bible? No way.

Do I let others do it? Sure, if that's their thing, but I won't waste my time with it. I think you make a good point, but really, it does make some of them better, so I'm all for that.

But I really don't think that Jesus saved us and all that jazz. Maybe somebody else is watching over us though. Ya never know!

=D

I think that a lot of people *hope* that it's fiction. They will be in for a rude awakening someday when they find out otherwise, along with a lot of other God-deniers.....

Why do some people believe in the Bible? Some have simple faith. Others have faith mixed with actual knowledge of the peoples and cultures of the times when it was actually handed down to us (history, etc.) You appear to have neither.

Edit:

The Bible hasn't caused a lot of death and killing. That's a convenient scapegoat. People themselves caused the death and killing. The actual lessons about God's relationship to mankind that the Bible teaches is a positive thing, and mankind is better off for it, by a long way.....

first off....what have you got against homeless guys writing books? Second, by saying "how do we know it wasn't..." it shows that you don't really know where it came from, so you don't "know" it's fiction. And the Bible is so accurate, has changed so many lives, has lasted so long, and is more widespread than any other book....it's not fiction. People and places mentioned in the Bible have been confirmed by excavations hundreds of years later. The gospel of Luke is considered to be one of the most accurate sources of historical data for that time. I definately think you should check this book out some more for yourself!

The bible is a historical document. Over time, it has been re-written so many times that it has lost its original meaning. Unfortunately, there are religious zealots who use this book to further their cause... often for political/financial gain. Like the Torah and Koran, it is Man-made. Women have no place in it (except to support the men, of course). Like the other books, it is a work of fiction: meant to tell stories, teach people local customs and traditions, and promote a kinder way of life. I used to believe the BS that was crammed down my throat until that humiliating day in grade 9 when, in front of my peers in school, I denied the existence of dinosaurs (the bible and church never spoke of them)!! The looks I got! That's what happens, people, when you brain-wash children into believing fairy-tales. I wish someone had told me that along with 'Mother Goose" and 'Jack and the Beanstalk', that the bible, too, was just a fairy-tale.....

Well I hate to be the one to tell you but it is not a lot of fiction. We have used it several time in classes I have taken in Roman history and ancient history. It is actually a well recorded record of events. Now I will say that some of it is faith based but a good part of it is factual based as well. The bible was used by several of my professors as a way to learn about historical events. And no I did not go to a religious college. It was a state college, the University of Kentucky.

The thing that matters has always, except in holy books interpretations been that you have to find, and master, yourself. The holy books also say the same thing, but the interpreters always want you to follow them because they need your support and money in order to be significant. The rulers do not determine the people. The people create the rulers.
