It means that you have an infection or your body has seen quite an inflammatory response to something. (Usually hand in hand.) WBC counts can also elevate in any number of conditions, Leukemia is a very concerning cause of this, although WBC counts are >30,000 in Leukemia.
If you doctor has informed you of this result, then they should be doing further testing to determine the cause.

There are obviously underlying reasons you were tested, which none of us know. Test results are always best discussed with the Dr who ordered them.
