Do not use a cooking wine: they usually are full of salt and other additives that you don't want. Most would say that you should use a white wine that you would drink (a good quality wine) but I find a good $2 Charles Shaw (from Trader Joes) works perfectly fine. White wines include chardonnay, white zinfindel, etc. I love cooking with Chardonnay, it's nice and light. Make sure that you add it after you cook the onions, garlic, etc. Add it, and let it reduce (cook out the alcohol flavor, leaving behind sweet wine flavor) then add the tomatoes. Good luck on cooking. Make sure to use good quality canned tomatoes (Muir Glenn and San Marazano are good brands; Albertsons brand would create a less flavorful sauce.)

You use a real white wine not cooking wine. I suggest a Sauvignon Blanc. It has a nice fruity soft flavour and will really enhance the marinara sauce. White wines are meant to drink young so if you do not use much of the bottle and do not drink it I suggest pouring it into ice cube trays and freezing it. Then pop the frozen wine cubes into a zip lock and keep in freezer. Then if you need some just grab a cube and pop it in what your cooking. If you do not freeze it the wine will not last too long.

The rule of thumb with cooking with wine is, if you wouldn't drink it, don't cook with it.
When you cook with wine, you won't get all of the subtle notes like you would if you were drinking it, so I doubt you'd be able to tell the difference between chardonnay and pinot grigio in your tomato sauce.
You can buy a decent enough bottle of wine for less than $10 at any liquor store, or even a regular grocery store. Don't drop the farm on an expensive wine if you're cooking with it. Drink the expensive one!
And to the girl above me? No, it would say white wine VINEGAR if it was supposed to be vinegar.

Not cooking wine. Don't cook with a wine that you don't drink. Plus the cooking wine is full of salt.
Go to the wine section and pick up a box of Franzia "Refreshing White" table wine. It is relatively inexpensive, but real wine. It comes in a box, that has an air tight pouch inside of it.
As you get more experience cooking and especially making sauces you will find more uses for this product. It deglazes perfectly and is a nice product and never goes bad, unlike bottled wines.

Use the kind of wine you'd like to be drinking yourself. And, most marinara's use a bold red wine instead of white. Stay away from cooking wine....its got loads of salt!~

Any white will do really, def not cooking wine or vinegar. Buy one you like and you can drink the rest while you eat the pasta!

Add meat to it. I've never made it but every marinara sauce I've ever eaten, was awful. I think you could use any kind of white wine, , perhaps sherry. But I would suggest using an alternative of some kind.
