Define Nightlife?!
Party-party-party. Best bands, excitement etc Sydney and Perth
Brilliant restaurants, sophistication, classy shows - Melbourne, Adelaide and Canberra
Sitting outside in magnificent warmth enjoying a beer and some live music with friends - Brisbane and Darwin
Some really quirky restaurants and romantic spots - Hobart!
Of course all have a bit of each but I think that sums up the strengths of each bigger city. Newcastle is a mini-Sydney and Geelong a mini-Melbourne for purposes of the above generalisations!
Smithton Tasmania has a nice Chinese Restaurant :-)

In order Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane/Gold Coast, Perth, Adelaide, Canberra, Hobart. The first two are way out in front of the rest.

Sydney without doubt!! Paddington, Darlinghurst, City etc are all great spots.
