You can start by calling them out politely using the respect card. Say something to the effect of, "Sir (or ma'am), I can understand your frustration and, while I did not personally cause this problem, it will be a lot easier for me to help you if you give me the same respect that you wish to receive".
In most cases, they will apologize to you and give you more respect. If they do get angrier, politely tell them that you will cannot help them while they choose to disrespect you and you will no longer subject yourself to their uncontrolled anger. Then let them know that you will get a supervisor.
Fortunately, these rude and immature customers are few and far between.
When I witness angry customers shouting or acting rudely and disrespectfully to employees or managers instead of holding a respectful conversation, I can hear the words that they are saying and I can also hear the subliminal messages that they are sending to me and everybody else that they are subjecting to their childish tantrum.
What subliminal messages am I talking about? Let's listen to the subliminal message this angry traveler is giving to the airline gate agent who just announced that the flight was cancelled and there was not going to be another flight until the next day as well as the other passenger who had to listen to his crap. ...
LOOK AT ME!!!
I AM MAD AND I DON'T CARE WHO I UPSET OR OFFEND. I AM MAD!!!
SINCE I AM MAD, I CHOOSE TO DISRESPECT YOU AND EVERYBODY HERE WHO HAS TO LISTEN TO MY RUDE, CHILDISH, IMMATURE, DISGUSTING BEHAVIOR!!!
DISRESPECT ME, EVERYBODY! WHEN I AM MAD, I CHOOSE TO OFFEND AS MANY PEOPLE AS I CAN BECAUSE I AM NOT MATURE ENOUGH TO HANDLE ISSUES RESPONSIBLY.
WHAT'S THE MATTER WITH YOU PEOPLE? WHY ARE YOU LOOKING AT ME LIKE THAT? AREN'T YOU STUPID ENOUGH TO BELIEVE THAT I T IS OK TO BECOME A RUDE JERK WHEN YOU GET UPSET? DON'T YOU KNOW THAT THE GOLDEN RULE, "TREAT OTHERS AS YOU WISH TO BE TREATED" MEANS THAT YOU HAVE TO RESPECT ME AND KISS MY A** BUT I DON'T HAVE TO RECIPROCATE?
HEY! TAKE THOSE DIAPERS AND PACIFIER AWAR FROM ME!!! IF I WANT TO BE A BIG BABY, I WILL BE A BIG BABY!!! WAA WAA WAA WAA WAA.......

When a customer becomes rude with me through no fault of my own, I simply try my hardest to be even nicer than usual. About half the time, the customer will calm down and realize that they've been rude for something that's no fault of my own, they'll feel bad and they'll apologize. And the other half of the time, I still have the satisfaction of knowing that I handled the situation professionally.

I know it may be hard but try to ignore them as long as you know you were not at fault this rude customer has a problem not you " let it go "The old quote that the customer is always right went out the window years ago.

You just told yourself how to deal with it in your question: it's not your fault. Besides, being insulting is not a necessary part of lodging a complaint. If the customer is unhappy with the service or with a product they need to stick to that complaint and not wander off into insulting employees. Getting their complaining back on track is the challenge.
Even if the customer is dissatisfied with an employee, insults serve no purpose.
Speaking as someone who has worked in management I have no patience for customers who indulge themselves in being insulting and will ask them to leave.

When you work in any industry where you deal with customers on a regular basis, you're going to find a rude one here and there. Just try to smile, and let it go....Maybe they are just having a horrible day, and you're the one that they chose to take it out on.

Just smile. After they leave you can vent to your co-workers. Actually, I have found a fun website that puts things into perspective and makes me laugh about all the annoying and sucky customers. It is called customerssuck.com. Check it out.

Well, I'd like a little more detail, but I would say, "I'm sorry if there's a problem. Would you like me to get the manager to see if he or she can solve it?" Don't indulge them by returning insults. Ignore the comments and ask them what you can do to help them. If their request is reasonable, do it. If not, apologize, and tell them that you can't help them. Offer another solution.

Be polite. If it is your job to deal with customers than you just have to take it-the customer is always right. Try to keep calm, speak in normal tones..if you can, try to be so reasonable and nice that they end up looking like assh0!es..kill them with kindness..

I usually feel sorry for them. Must be rough to go through life having to be rude to people like that, for no reason. Smile, and let it roll off your back, while seeing if you can help them.
