Okay your going to have to be in the military to answer this question, Heres the deal, Im currently in the navy, and where I am stationed (shore duty) I have met sombody in the same department as I am, we have decided after a year that we want to get married, obviously that cant happen right now because we are both in the same department at the same command and that would be against the navys policy. we are very serious (though VERY professional on duty)_and are not on the same duty section. We have both been back to each others home states and met each others family so this isnt just som military bullshit like usuall, but very serious. Im up for orders soon and she is due to get out and go on reserves. If i get overseas orders to a place i can bring my family, would it be possible if i marry her when i leave to bring her with me, with her being reserves and all?

You can marry. You need to inform your chain of command and they will start the paperwork to move one of you. But if you or him dont fall under the same command or neight of you are asupervisor of the other then it is not a problem.

Navy Marriage Regulations

To my knowledge, marrying while in the same command is not an issue as long as you are not in the same duty section and neither of you is the other's direct supervisor or has any say in the other's yearly reviews. Of course, if one is an officer and the other enlisted, that is a whole new can of worms...just a no no no matter where you would work.

As you are due to move soon, it seems like the time has come to approach the command with this relationship. It will be far easier to marry now and get her on your orders (and get your orders changed to a new station if needed) than to move, get married and they try to arrange it all, possibly while you are at sea or deployed.. Her reserve duty shouldn't be a huge issue. Most overseas bases can accomodate reservists. We lived on an Air Base in Northern Japan for seven years and one of my closest friends did her Naval Reserve duty every month while they were stationed there. The key is to get things going as soon as possible. Now dont use this as an excuse to marry if you are not at that point yet, but if it is something the two of you have decided to do , it may serve your relationship best to look at doing it sooner than later.

you know since ive been in. i would get married way before you go overseas. Dont marry her after you go over there. The military (not just the navy) can have you separated up to a year. So if i was you I would marry her as soon as you can so you can have all the paperwork done. If she goes into the reserves than she can drill pretty much anywhere. I was a reservist then i went active and married a marine. If you get married you would have to route a chit to inform your command and then they can make arrangements for one of you to go to sea duty. If shes already getting out then they might send her to TPU and she can finish her time there. THey might even move up your orders to get you out. Ive learned not to put anything past the navy. One thing is for sure. they will move one of you out of that command. Just take care of your paperwork before you go. if you marry after you get there. I can almost guarantee you that they might just keep u separated for a while. (possibly a yr.) The navy hasnt really worked with navy/marine marriages. They have worked more with navy/navy. I wish you two the best of luck...

Weeeeellll....my husband is in the military and we are apart all the time. We've been married for 11 years now and doing OK but it is hard. In some ways I like the independence and being alone sometimes. But if you have kids down the track one of you will be taking the lion's share of the childcare (even if you send them to daycare someone's work still suffers) and it is easy to become resentful if the other partner is tripping around the world. For me I don't miss the sex that much when he's away. But he is a bit of a tiger and while I do trust him...every now and then a little thought comes in... I think you can make it work, but you'll need to work out some ground rules. If you're young then make sure you have a good time and don't get too serious too soon letting life pass you by.

Check with her reserve unit about her taking a leave from the reserves or if there is a way she can drill over there in a reserve status. It would depend partly on where you would be stationed. Is she going Active or InActive Reserves.
I don't agree with your description of not marrying presently. I knew a few couples who were married and in the same department. When I was stationed in Argentia Newfoundland, there were a couple of married couples there, some were enlisted and some officer. One couple was the husband and wife doctors at the base.
If one of you is senior to the other, then yes the Navy frowns on this type of marriage due to undue influence or favoritism. Additionally, if one is enlisted and one officer, your chances or marrying while serving are slim to none anyway.

yeap, although she may have to go IRR, or work out some sort of arrangement with her Reserves Unit. I know when I lived in Japan, several spouses were also Reservists and did their drills either all at once in the States or did them on base in Yokosuka( these were mostly HMs and Doctors/Nurses).

Oh yeah, BTW, unless there is more than 2 degrees of rank separation( or one is an O and one is an E) you can get married now. Hell, in Yokosuka there were THREE sets of dual military couples, all at the same command, but in different departments/duty sections and none had operational authority over their spouses.

To make it short....

You can marry her the moment you are not in the same immediate command. The regs actual state "intimate relations", not just marriage, but you are already at that point, oh well.

Your orders have to be "accompanied" orders, meaning that the Navy will allow and pay for her to come along with you. You can get those changed in most cases, depending upon location and duty, but it can also extend your tour from 1 year to 3 years, if it is physically overseas (Okinawa, Japan, for example).

Well first, who told you , that you couldn't get married yet ?

It doesn't matter if your in the same command and the same department. It actually doesn't matter if your in the same duty section, as long as one of you does not have operational authority over the other.

She can request to be released from her Drilling reserve duty and placed in IRR, due to moving overseas.

If she is at the end of her enlistment, she would normally be going into IRR anyway, not the drilling reserves.

Are you an officer and she enlisted or vice versa? If that's the case, I think you're stuck up the creek without any fuel in your submarine. I'm not sure about departments since I'm Army, but the reg on fraternization is universal throughout the military.
