An 8 year old smashed her hand in the sliding automatic door a few days ago. it's sore but it's ok. The video proves it. Her parents were only 10 ft away paying for their items. i conducted a few tests so I could explain to my DM later this week. I tested it with a broom and then with my own hand. She had to have her hand there for at least a full minute for it too be smashed. The door opens quickly but closes very slowly. Any small disturbance such as a finger jerk or burp would have caused the door to swing open. I can't imagine an 8 year old being able to keep their hand their for that long, even out of curiousity. I'm starting to suspect her parents made her do this? To prevent myself from sounding cruel in front of my DM, I want your opinion. Does this sound suspicious or just an accident caused by irresponsible parenting? I heard her parents hired a lawyer.

I wasn't there when the accident happened. I will be the only manager on duty when the DM comes to ask about this so I have to explain the whole situation to him.

from my tests the door is extra sensitive.

The door is an automatic sliding door. You stand in front it opens for your. You walk away and it starts closing.

The video shows her standing in front of the door and it opened. It then shows her putting her hand at the end of the door. 30 secs pass and the door starts closing. Another 30 secs later the door smashes her hand. her hand is there for the whole 60 secs

I'm thinking like you. But maybe the kid wasn't paying any attention to the door. Either way, the parents should have been watching their child. It does sound suspicious though.

It could be just an accident. Children can get hurt easily in ways we don't even think possible. I remember working at a daycare center and a little girl decided to put her hand out as the door of the elevator was closing. It peeled the skin off her finger. They didn't find any of us to be responsible as we were taking care of 8 other kids in the elevator and the girl just happen to move faster than we could at that exact split second. Another example, my 2 year old likes to play the game at the local store. It is a small store where everybody knows us and so while i pay for groceries he plays the game. One day as I was reaching the cashier the money he decided to stick his hand in the door. The store lady pulled him away just in time. They can't always think fast enough to pull away. Kids smash fingers and hands and feet all the time. It is a common injury for children. So it is hard to say if the little girl did it on purpose to get attention, if she did it because her parents said to or if it was just an accident. EIther way it doesn't surprise me that the parents got a lawyer. If they win the case it will be for hospital or Dr bills. If I was your DM I would have someone come in and look at the door and see how it is closing and you might have to testify to the fact that the parents weren't watching her.

I doubt her parents told her to do it. She is only 8, so she is curious. The scary part is her parents were not watching her. As for the doors automatically opening when they touch something, I don't trust doors anymore. My family rented a condo on vacation. We were on the 17th floor. As we were getting in the elevator to go down, the door started to shut on my 4 year old. it kept pushing her and did not stop. I had my baby in my arms so I pushed her out of the elevator into the hall. She did not get hurt, just scared something horrible. We also managed to open the doors before we left the door to retrieve her (and her grandparents). Basically technology does weird things. Don't trust it to do what it suppose to do. And I say don't tell your DM. Just let him see the video and make his own conclusions.

I have 8 yr old twins and this sounds like something they would do. They've had numerous body parts stuck in revolving doors, so I can imagine the draw of an automatic door. It's magical to them at that age. They just want to see how it works, even if it just by touching it.

If there is any negligence on anyone's part, it is the parents. If I'm waiting in line somewhere, I'm checking on where my kids are every 10 seconds or so. Unfortunately, courts don't usually agree.

It may be suspicious...it may not be. I would recommend just stating the facts as you witnessed them when you speak with your DM and keep your opinions to yourself unless specifically asked. (for your own sake)

It doesn't sound like the family has any real grounds for a law suit anyway. Unless they could prove that the door was malfunctioning in some way, the management was aware of the problem, and nothing was being done to fix the door.

this info alone does not sound suspicious. She was probably playing with the door or something. I dont think an 8 year old would actually leave her hand in the door that long knowing its getting ready to get smashed. I wouldnt even have the guts to do that.

i don't think her parents made her do it. i did stupid things like that as a kid. What will happen if? That won't hurt because it closes so slowly. I would not say anything to the DM let them deal with corparte on that one. Your job is done now except maybe to testify if it gets that far but it won't.
There were irresponsible and as a parent i would be mad at my child but i guess i still have morals and i am not money hungry

I don't think this was set up. You people in management are always trying to find away out. Why would a child purposely smash their hand into a door and hold it their for 5 min. Come on now. You are just trying to keep yourself from getting a law suit. When you have kids I hope this doesn't happen to them, then someone like you are working as a manager that doesn't care is involved.

They are probably getting a lawyer because of your attitude towards the situation. Get a life. And have a heart for once.

Sounds suspicious to me. Probably is.

Starving people might be willing to do desperate things to try to keep their home for their family. Remember that "the official" unemployment figures just count new claims paid, not new claims filed and denied. And if you know you aren't eligible for unemployment, who is gonna file...

Slip and fall in a store is still easier than robbing a bank for some people to raise quick cash.

It does sound suspicious, but kids can surprise you with how they get hurt!

I would just have a chat with the DM and not mention that. Either way its not your fault, and you dont want to accuse them of something.
