What's the point of consuming alcohol?

Question

I've never had alcohol, and I know a lot of people who are addicted to it. So what's the point? No, I'm not considering drinking, just asking out of curiosity. How does it make you feel?

Alcohol can lower inhibitions and offer mild feeling of euphoria. It also dulls the senses which is why many people use the phrase "take the edge off'.
People generally feel more relaxed, loose and carefree under the influence of even small amounts of ethyl alcohol.
Its consumption is also a social convention used in a variety of settings from social to business and has been so for thousands of years.
As with anything its best in moderation and its abuse can turn mild effects into more severe and dangerous ones.
If you're fine without it then don't worry about it. It's not for everyone.

Alcohol is consumed for several reasons. One reason is that people feel more socially comfortable and outgoing while using alcohol. Another reason is to get drunk, a feeling which some people enjoy. Side effects of intoxication vary from a happy "buzz" feeling to blackout and death. Consuming alcohol can be very fun or very bad; it all depends on the situation.

The traditional reason for drinking alcohol was that it is safe to drink, because bacteria are killed by alcohol, and alcoholic drinks were sterile. Right up to the end of the nineteeth century, the water was unsafe to drink, even in big cities like London; and serious diseases like typhoid and cholera were spread from town water supplies.

In many schools, even primary schools up to the first world war, the students were given two or three pints of a light beer to drink, because it was safe.

In many countries even today, the water is unsafe.
