Chevyinthedark is way off course. Why do people assume that the military have no training that can be used in areas such as law enforcement? College is good if it is in criminal justice areas, or social work. The military has law enforcement personnel who undergo the same type of investigative training tha the police academies use. They are trained in report writing, investigation and other areas including accident investigation.
Overall the military would be the best way if you have prior law enforcement training such as the Army Military Police or the Air Force Air Police, both of which are highly trained in all facets of law enforcement.

Military will probably help the most in career advancement because you can use the military preference points for hiring and rank advancement. Most departments like to see college on your rat jacket and many require applicants to have at least a 2 year degree.

College in and of itself does not make you a better policeman since I've worked with degreed officers that couldn't turn their own fart sack inside out by themselves. Military occupational skills may help a great deal.

Most departments that have many detectives at all are going to be in larger cities or metro areas and competition will be stiff. So probably both college and military would be good. Personally, if I had to pick just one, it would be military, for the above listed reasons.

Military, There are plenty of young College types who pass the test every year and then can't hack it.
Report writing is a mandatory though. Take what courses you can and start writing reports of things that happen to you.
Detectives stay or go based on thier ability to articulate an investigation in court.

This is going to be a hard answer, but the reality is that either one will benefit you. However, college will definitely help you advance, military experience may not.

To become a police officer you MUST have college. Minimum two year degree in Criminal justice, but a 4 year degree is preferred.
