to get a simple DRIVERS PERMIT, First you need to complete drivers Ed and Health in Safety in your highschool. then you need to go apply for one at a local DMV with your parents, bring your social security card and birth certificate. They should help you fill out form DL44, and then someone will perform a VERY simple vision test, all you will do is tell the person if you can see the letters on a chart, then you wait a bit, and then you take a written test. for this test you need to study the drivers handbook. The total amount of questions on the test is 36 or so, and you can only miss a maximum of 8 (I think) to pass.
If you study well, it should be no problem. after you get it, DO NOT drive on the main roads for at least a few weeks, get your parents to help you control a car in a parking lot or small streets before you join traffic. We have enough bad drivers in CA.
Good luck.
PS. When you are finally driving, be respectful to motorcycle riders, like me. Maybe we'll meet on the road sometime, but both of us should be able to drive away. So stay safe and alert.

Just walk into any DMV and pick up a booklet to study or download it online. You do not need to drive a car to get a permit. The whole point of permit is to learn how to drive a car before you take the DMV drivers test when you turn 16. I know laws have changed since I was a teen (I'm 30 now). It also depends on the state. Here in CA I believe you can't ride with any other minors (ex. your friends) in the car for the 1st year. Pack your friends in the trunk for the 1st year. If they need a ride they won't mind. That's what the kids do here so the cops don't bust them.

Nope first you gotta complete driver's ed, enroll in a driving class (your instructor will sign papers for you to bring), get the DL 44 (you can pick it up at the DMV),
the fee is $26, you can only drive with a licensed adult over the age of 25
the permit test is a written test btw, no driving whatsoever :)
&yes, you are eligible for your driving test 6 months after you receive your permit

ya why don't you just check the dmv website... it's all in there. Or go to the DMV and pick up a Driver's learning booklet and start studying out of there. personally I would recommend you wait til you are 17 1/2 so you don't take your classes and get your permit directly. by the way there is a law that you can't drive your friends in the trunk anymore.

Check out the Department of Motor Vehicle's site. Most of your questions should be answered there.
My son just got his permit. It is only a written test (multiple choice). You take the driving part when you apply for a regular license when you are 16 or older.

I have heard, (and its common practice in other countries) that the US is pushing to move the permit age in all states to 17 1/2 and licensing at 18. And a class should be required. It makes sense to me. I look back a really felt I was too young to have a license at the age of 15 1/2 even though I was a mature person, and I had a job ...etc I know it made my parents life easier as far as driving me around...but who knows, maybe its the pace of the future.
