if you manage to successfully upgrade, all your files will be fine. the reason i say manage, is that when you are upgrading, it may catch you and cancel it. either way, your files should be fine.

There should be no harm done to your non-Windows files at all - no reason for that to happen. I just hope your upgrade works OK. I would suggest asking a techie in a computer store where they service computers if they foresee any problems in going from the pirated XP to the genuine XP. If you have the full version of genuine XP, they may suggest that you remove the pirated version first.

I suggest you invest in some external storage and backup/copy any files you want before you make another move.

I doubt very much that you will be able to upgrade. I'm sure Microsoft will immediately catch the pirated version of Windows and let you know you have to buy the full version.

Why not back everything up before you upgrade. If you keep all of your "dynamic data" under My Documents, your backup process should be much easier. If it's scattered all over your C: drive, you'll have a big job.

Just back all of your dynamic data (music, notes, etc.) to CD or DVD, upgrade to a legal copy of Windows XP Home, and restore your data.

If you choose the option to NOT format your partition (just install into the existing partition) you'll be okay.

Assuming the new version of XP Home is legit, when you put in the product key, it will validate just fine.

You will need to reinstall all your other applications.

i doubt if it will upgrade, but you can try, likely you will have format, wipe the drive and install with an xp disk. and that means wiping your hard drive of everything

You MAY (Don't hold me to this) be able to upgrade simply by changing your product key to a genuine one.
Go here:http://www.experts-exchange.com/Operating_Systems/Q_21998125.html and
here:http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/selfhelp/PKUInstructions.aspx and read both articles, from my reading of both it seems that you may be able to do it this way without having to do much at all.
hope it helps anyway
