I take no offense at the term that was originally given as a derogatory title. To most of the world we're known as Mormons. That's good enough for me.

It's not disrespectful. It's a nick name that was given a long time ago by people who hated the church. Making fun of the book of mormon. The church, since the beginning has been called The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints- but as you can see, that's quite a mouthful. Mormons was easy for people to remember and it was more well known than LDS so it stuck. It is the term that has been used since the start of the church, and is why the choir was named that so many years ago. If they had named them the LDS choir, than no one would have known who or what the were. More recently the church has been trying to make LDS more of a household name, just because mormon was started by people who were hateful towards us, but it's not disrespectful. It's who we are. Write a letter to the Presidency! Maybe they will change it just for you!

As far as the church is concerned, the only time they don't want "MORMON" used is, that we are NOT "The Mormon Church". I mean, I have cyber-chatted with people who said "There's no Mormons in MY town!" and I said, bet there are, look it up in the Yellow Pages.
Nope, no listing here for the Mormon Church.
Look under The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, that's our OFFICIAL name.
Well, I'll be darned! There ARE Mormons in my town!
Even tho I, personally, would rather be referred to as LDS, I don't care or mind at all if I'm called a Mormon. As long as you know I do not belong to "The Mormon Church", as there is no such animal.

It is not disrespectful to call them Mormons. The church was looking to change it's image a bit and so they chose to go with the "newer" image of the church by using the term Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints instead of the older term "Mormons". Purely advertising.
