It's so rude.

A smile is a "gift". And just because YOU feel like giving someone a gift- DOESN'T automatically mean that everybody ELSE is obligated to give YOU one- back! I smile at everyone too... -But knowing that many people don't have anything to smile about; I understand if they don't "return" my courtesy. It's NOT about being "rude"- it's about not wanting to "fake" what you don't feel. They're being honest...-Just like your "smile"- is being friendly. :)

Hate is a rather strong word, so I wouldn't say I hate it...but it certainly is unnerving! I can say I definitely feel uncomfortable when this happens. I get the feeling that I did something very wrong and I've no idea what it was.

The best thing to remember in this situation is that not all people were raised with the same set of social skills and that some people may come from a culture where smiling is considered a "come on." Take into account that perhaps the person is having a bad day, is too wrapped up into him/herself to even notice anyone else or their own expressions or has a social disorder and does not recognize such cues.

it just reminds of the time when people would smile at me and I would just ignore them haughtily! And I figure out how rude I must have been to them, and how hurt they must have felt! Just know that even if they didn't smile back, you've made their day! A smile can't hurt! Somehow you've brightened up their day!

Does that person know you? If not, why should she smile back? Why do you impose an unduly duty on someone and demand a reciprocal gesture or you will accuse her of being rude? Who is the true rude person here?

No. That person could have had a death in their family or be fighting depression or another problem. Although they might not react outwardly, perhaps your smile might brighten up what could be a horrible day. So continue to smile and don't expect the same in kind...but when it happens, count it as a little sunny spot in your day.

It's okay for me. I can't make him responsible to smile back or say hi if he doesn't feel like it. I may not feel good about it but not to the extent or condemning of hating what he did. It's him. Besides, he didn't ask me to smile for him.

Be happy that YOU are happy, and can smile.

Who knows anothers troubles or heart.

Maybe their friend just died, or they lost a job, or their home.

God knows. But keep up the joy, and smile.

I know, they should at least fake a smile or give a half smile back, a nod or something... but when they totally ignore it.. that's what I call "ruuuude".
