I've been invited to a little boys 1st birthday party. I want to give a gift that his mother will find to be useful, helpful, or one of those "Oh my god, That's PERFECT" type of gifts. If you have a son around a year, what would you like to receive right now. I'm just a friend or the birthday boy, not family, so nothing to outrageous.

I think its awesome of you to consider her wishes, too. At 1 year old, he's probably not going to care a whole lot, and may even be so overwhelmed by the party that he tunes out to everything. What would mom really want? Diapers, lol. But that is absolutely no fun for the child, so I'd get something useful to them both. Here's some stuff my son got at that age that he liked and still uses and I think are useful, too:
1)A soft fleece Elmo blanket. It had Big Bird and all them on it, too. His grandmother actually made it, she bought a big piece of patterened fleece material and sewed up the edges so it looked nice.
2)Little People School Bus set with Little People in it. Most 1 year olds will just gnaw on the little people, but will soon start really enjoying the bus, too.
3)Make a basket of bath stuff: bath colors (look in the bubble bath/soap aisle at Walmart for a green box with a handle and Sesame Street characters. It has 3 colors in it), a character bath mit, rubber duckie or two or three, bath squirters, a spout cover that protects them in case they get near the bath tub faucet, etc.
4)Some really cool sippee cups. Tonka makes some truck ones my son really loved/loves. They're insulated and don't leak which is great for mom. To make it look more like a 'present' you could put a basket together with the cups and a couple bottles of Juicy Juice or Gerbers Splashers. Watch out if you include juice though - Juicy Juice is 100% fruit juice, no added sugar, that's why its good. Gerbers Splashers are awesome b/c they are 100% juice...mixed with water so the baby gets less of the natural sugar.
5)An activity table - be a little wary. Try and find one that has actual activities, and not just buttons baby pushes to make noise at him. Beads, lids to open, buttons to slide over, those are good.
6)Books can be good if he doesn't already have a ton. My son was crazy about a Thomas board book he had, and he still loves his Elmo board book - it has an Elmo Finger puppet in the middle of the book, and the book is the 'If you're happy and you know it...." song.

Go to Toys R Us (even if you don't end up buying there b/c they're prices are ridiculous sometimes) and cruise the toy aisle for his age group. Don't get anything that's too far above his age group, he won't be interested or will get frustrated.

Something to steer clear of, at least, something I HATE it when people buy my son (well I don't hate it, I mean, its the thought that's really sweet) is toys that talk and make a bunch of lights and stuff. Its not good for baby, uses lots of batteries, and is irritating.

If you know the boy's clothing size, a new outfit, or pair of pajamas would be nice. Stores are starting to come out with winter stuff now, so maybe a nice winter outfit in one size larger than he is currently wearing. She probably has enough summer stuff, but not enough winter stuff.

In the next few months her son will probably start learning to use a spoon, fork, plate, ect. A simple set of toddler dishes is another idea.

Toys are good too. For a 12 month old think balls (balls are the favorite toy for half of all toddler boys), simple books (like 1-3 words per page), blocks, toys that require dumping something out of a box and putting it back in, stacking toys, or a baby sized chair. These are all my son's favorite things.

It can be kinda hard to say for sure what is the "best" toy, because there can be a huge difference in abilities for a 1 year old. Some one year olds have mastered walking, others have just started crawling. So try to keep the child's abilities in mind. Also, if you include a card with an offer of a free night's babysitting, the mother will say "oh my god, That's PERFECT" regardless of what the actual gift is!

Good luck

DVD's are always a hit with mothers and children!! Banana's in Pyjamas or WIggles is great! Bob the builder is usually always good for little boys too!! (my son's 1st birthday was a bob the builder party as he was so into him and still is at 2.5yrs) They can give mum some much needed respite for a few minutes while she cleans or cooks.
He also received a play tool table which is still being used and also a elmo/sesame street play guitar that he loved.
Bath toys are always used too. Things to stick on the tiles amuse children so much.
I would stay away from clothes and shoes as he may not need them and then it is wasted money.

Hope that helps!

The mother probably wants clothes. What I always do is call the mother up and say "Now, does he want clothes or toys?" If she says clothes, get them. Maybe even some little toy to show the kid you care, too.
If you don't want to take that route, I'd get a toy that has many different things to do that would keep the kid occupied for a good while.

I would say an outfit cause you can never have enough clothes but when my son was 1 (he's 3 now) a friend of ours bought him a school bus with people and I didn't think much of it at the time but he just LOVED it, he played with it until he was almost 2 1/2.

I would not worry about a gift. Just make a big party for him. The first party you'll always remember. Invite all your friends and family members.

What does MOMMY really want - any toy or book that doesn't make any noise!!!

I loved the little tikes wagon I got for my twins 1st birthday. They seemed to be willing to get pulled in a wagon when they wouldn't sit in a stroller. It still gets used today.

i think you are right about it more being a present for mom... at 1 yeah i cool light up toy that talks and helps teach abc.. colors.. shapes.. what ever is good but i think that something that is going to make my life easier is what im hoping my daughter gets at her 1st b day... i know its for a boy so let me think.. is he potty trained or getting there? maybe a trainer seat.. or even one of those new portable ones... pull ups... then there are those walk and ride things at Toys R Us that let you push and let them learn to walk... just go through the Toys R Us online thing find something that you think will help both mom and baby... Goodluck..

Honestly if you can't come to something just give her money so that she can buy him something that she wants for him, if not I agree with clothes, or footwear. A mom can never have enough of clothes for their kids. The kid doesn't know anyway and I'm sure he will get a lot of toys from all the other guests!

the present is for the child not the mother so it is about what he would like. A little people truck or fisherprice one are good. Bath toys are great. Kids this age often like to move toys so ones with wheels are great
