Credit cards were stolen (among other items) from my vehicle today. Police considering it grand theft for the dollar amount. The sheriff who took the report called me a few minutes ago and asked if I wanted them to dust my car for prints. I told him sure why not but I don't feel like it will ever do any good. I've had so many things stolen and the cops never find it.

When I called to report my credit card stolen they told me someone already tried to use my card twice and two large chain stores (credit card company declined to the high dollar amount/suspicious activity). I mentioned this to the sheriff and he told me to call up the detectives and let them know in the morning. I would assume they got these guys on video. But will they really take the time to investigate?

My g/f's mom had her bank card stolen and cash was stolen from her ATM. She had to pay $500 to have the "tape reviewed" to prove it wasn't her. Doesn't seem right for some reason.

It depends. Most departments don't have the resources (unless it is one of their own that is the victim) to investigate individual grand theft claims. A recent case I was involved in was only investigated because it involved 10 other grand theft reports that were perpetrated by the same individual. I received some of my stuff back.

This is why I constantly state that cops do not usually prevent crime, they merely act as a secretarial service. Most of the crime reports, or essentially 100% of the online crime reports fall into a black hole and only used for statistical purposes. Very much a waste of your time. And the police wonder why people resort to vigilantism.

Most property crimes are very hard to do anything with. This business about fingerprints is pretty much BS. You have to compare the prints with somebody. Do you have any idea how many people touch your car? You, every member of your family, all your friends, a few of your enimies, coworkers, the guy at the gas station, etc. Too many people to check with limited resources.

Most property crimes are solved by detectives watching trends. Where are the crimes being committed, When are the crimes happening, what is being taken, where is the stolen stuff showing up, what methods are being used to steal, are there any criminals on record who use these methods, etc.

Once you can find the pattern you can find the offenders. It does take a lot of time and patience. Some times we can shorten the process by an inovative sting operation. But those are expensive, difficult to set up, and even harder to run.

The video?? Probably useless. I never have understood why a bank would install cameras with such low resolution that the picture is so grainy you cann't even tell what race the guy is. If you were lucky and your bank actually takes their security seriously, the detectives are going thru files trying to identify the offender. It is not like the TV/movie where they slip the picture into some kind of gadget and the computer pops out an ID. Some detective is sitting in a room with several hundred photos trying to match the picture.

They only investigate if donuts were stolen. I've solved more crimes than the police in this town.

Reports are only investigated if there are evidence for the apprehension of the suspect/s.

Don't expect too much from the police on these types of crimes. They are very low priority.
