I had a roach problem in an apartment in Boston and found out how to get rid of them. The boric acid only works (sort of) for those roaches who march through it. Most will not. I checked with the Department of Agriculture and was told to use a spray of Diazinon. It is VERY effective and, after the third spray (in as many days), I had the only apartment for blocks around that was clear. After that, I only had to spray every 3-4 weeks. The stuff is a nerve gas so you cannot leave any pets (including fish) in your place after spraying. I used to spray on my way out to work. Upon return, I would take a big breath in the hall, go in, open the windows, and wait in the hall for about five minutes.

Roaches are tough, they become immune to most poisons pretty quickly. A professional pest control business has non-poison methods that are more effective- they interrupt the biological functions/reproduction of roaches. If you can't afford pros, then use boric acid, it's the most effective roach killer but you have to give it time to work. But keep it away from kids or pets.

Cockroaches are harmless, though they can be gross.
Before you goto bed maybe reads or write to get your mind off of it. Simply squish them the next time you see it, don't fret over it. That is all I can do to help, good luck with better answers. 0=).
