Civil war will occur, but not at the scale we might expect (all-out warfare), probably just skirmishes here and there between eternal foes in the same country.
Private contractors may not be more effective than soldiers, but they're certainly treated better and have more benefits to their service than our soldiers. Something needs to be done about that.

IF indeed we could resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, stabilize Lebanon and Iraq, and get Iran and Syria to stop exporting terrorism, we would indeed have made historic progress. My fear is that none of these aims is achievable with negotiation. Rightly or wrongly (I think wrongly), the Arabs and Muslims do not accept, and will never agree to accept, a state of Israel in the region. Not without a fight. I hope I'm wrong - Egypt seems to have backed off since Carter's Camp David accords - but I just don't see that region ending its efforts to get rid of the state of Israel, no matter how much land they give up. If this were WWII, we would be at least making bombing runs into Iran and Syria to halt their supplying of terrorists going into Iraq. There's still the sectarian violence, but this would help. I don't have answers, and I am not optimistic. I hope I am wrong about all this. But I think things will get much worse before they get better. God help us.

Here's a couple scenarios, take your pick and dream:
1- US stays in Iraq. Iraq cools down in a few years. Everyone is happy.
2- US stays in Iraq. After 10 years, there are perfect delineated ethnic areas. Iraq falls apart, various sects create new countries.
3- US leaves Iraq. Sunnis and Shias, in celebration, embrace each other as brothers and kick all foreigners out of Iraq.
4- US leaves Iraq. Sunnis and Shias launch all out ethnic cleansing, causing Saudi Arabia and Iran to come to the aid of their main sect. War engulfs the Persian Gulf, and the US is brought in again, along with UN forces/approval, in order to stop massive killing. (Or help Israel, because you know someone is going to shoot at them if this happens)
And that's just main points. Things could be added from one to the other, or probably things I haven't thought of.

So many questions. Don't bother, the whole thing is the biggest political and military mess in the history of the world.
We will all be dead and buried before this lot is sorted out.

The US won't get out until bankers make enough money funding the war.

Simple and honest answer: no one knows. We all can speculate about what might happen until we're blue in the face, but until certain events occur, nobody can be sure.
