Don't be so sure about "no Christian would condone this today." There are quite a sizable minority of the church that would consider capital punishment for homosexuality a good idea. The same is true for Islam.

God hates ALL sexual deviance. In fact, I find it fascinating that you focus on the homosexual aspect of it. Sodomy is in fact ANY unnatural sexual act, to include, for example, heterosexual anal sex. The verse you cite is about same or opposite sexual deviance.
ONCE a society determines that something, ANYTHING, is wrong and decides to make it an act prohibited by law then it must also decide on a punishment. Stoning was the punishment for certain acts, just as severing limbs is today in some countries.
I'm frankly not sure I even understand your question. Why was it okay? Because the law of the land during those times said it was okay.

different rule set, before the time of abraham, there was nothing wrong with incest, gross by todays standards but consider in that time there were no genetic mutations to act on and create mental/ physical disabilities.
animal sacrifices, today its grounds for being locked up in a padded room but back then it was used to cover for sins. then jesus came around and the rules (OT to NT) were rewritten to the basic idea of what we have today.
i find it intresting how even in (some) tribes thought not to have ever come in contact with people outside their group have the basic foundations and laws as Christianity.

i think its not right either way the 10 commandments stated do not kill yet they found conditions for such acts. You can't kill, but commit this act yo'll die. As for homosexuals since they can't produce well maybe its a good thing maybe they are here in this world to slow down the population from being so huge cuz the people that multiply can't control themselves.

Buddha was around about 500BC, he certainly didn't condone the killing of anything. There have been followers of him ever since- so there have been people against killing for whatever reason since at least then!
It might have been ok for *some* people, but definitely not all.. Just in the screwy west & old lands (I.e. Middle-East) lol.

Because God made Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve. A lock must have a key in order to be functional. Two males cannot multiply and replenish the earth.

What else can one expect from people who were kicked out of society and ended up being nomads in the wilderness? They went mad and wrote funny stuff. Meanwhile in the civilized and enlightened world (ie Babylon & Greece), homos were considered cool.

That verse is mistranslated. Read in an Old German Bible it would say, "A man married to a man shall not sleep with a man married to a man".

For one thing, this command to kill homosexuals is not written to Christians, it's written to Jews living under a theocracy.
