Well, you'd get two different answers about mine, and I was baptized only once. As an evangelical (in particular, Southern Baptist) I was thoroughly and properly baptized, by immersion, in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
The Baptists told me it was a "believer's baptism", that is, I had already been "saved" and the baptism was symbolic of my obedience to Christ. It also made me a member of their church.
Several years later, though, I converted to Catholicism. The Catholic Church accepted my prior baptism as entirely valid, and I learned there that my baptism had set me apart for God and conferred saving grace. That particular explanation seems to line up more with the Biblical emphasis on the importance of baptism, rather than relegating it to mere symbolism.
I guess you could say I received a two-for-one.

Ex-christian here. I was baptized twice. Once when I was an infant, so I only know what I was told about that. Apparently it was a very small potatoes thing. Mom and Dad took me to the baptismal font after Sunday service, and the minister read some stuff and sprinkled water on my forehead.
The second time was when I was converted to Catholicism. Similar situation, but as an adult, the priest had me lean over the font and tilt my head to the side, and he poured water over my forehead.
It dried up in both cases. I'm a witch now.
