trying to put modem ~200ft from phone jack. Signal seems unstable.

you should NEVER use a line cord 200 ft long even for voice... you need to install a new jack...

I would not recommend a line cord longer then 25 ft as a maximum, but the shorter the better...

get some cat 3 or cat 5 cable, and a phone jack...
open the jack you currently have, and connect the blue/white to green, and the solid blue to the red... then staple the wire with T-18 or T-25 staples to the baseboard and connect the jack at the other end of the wire the same way...

I believe it to be 50' with regular everyday round phone line beige 3/16 of an inch diameter. Running a greater distance may require line conditioning by the phone company. You may be able to use Cat 5 cable.
